The Weld County Department of Public Health and Environment offers free lead testing and blood lead screenings for at-risk residents.
Lead can hide in unexpected places, like old paint or imported products found in the home, the department warned in a news release.
The U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission recently issued a recall for several imported faucet models, which contained dangerously high levels of lead, the department warned. To view the faucet recall list, go to cpsc.gov.
Lead in faucets can leach into drinking water, posing a significant health risk, especially to young children and pregnant women, the county release said.
“Lead exposure is a serious public health concern, and it’s more common than people realize,” the department said in the release.
To protect families from the harmful effects of lead poisoning, Weld County offers a lead prevention program with free services, public education and more.
The department conducts blood lead screenings, available by appointment or at community outreach events, and environmental home inspections when children have elevated levels. The program partners with local medical providers regarding consultation and follow-up procedures. Officials also prioritize education on how to prevent and respond to lead poisoning.
“Because lead poisoning often has no visible symptoms, testing is the only way to know if a child has been exposed or if lead is present in the home,” the release said.
The health department encourages residents living in homes built before 1978 to take precautions to avoid lead exposure, including “frequent handwashing, wet cleaning of surfaces, removing shoes at the door and monitoring for deteriorating paint,” the release said.
