Stephen Maguire shut down criticism of his cue switching by winning the 2025 Championship League.
The Scot beat Joe O’Connor 3-1 in the final on Wednesday in the first ranking event of the season.

“I know the cues are better now, but there is still the throw and the touch and feel. It takes a good couple of months to get used to that.
“So all this changing cue business, you might win the odd match, but you are not going to win a tournament with a new cue.”

“Just relieved, it’s been a long month-and-a-half,” he said afterwards. “Up and down that motorway all the time. Good to win in the end.
“Coming into today, eight players and two groups left, it felt more important because we knew someone was going to be going away with the trophy.
“To be the last man standing, so early in the season as well… Listen, I’m over the moon.

“It’s not the biggest tournament in the world, but I’ll take it.”

Speaking after the second round at the 2022 World Snooker Championships, Maguire revealed how many different cues he’s used.
“I’ve been struggling with cues for the last few years, really,” he told Betfred.
“I think in tournaments, I’ve played with about 30 cues over the last few years, which is terrible.
“I think I paid the price for it with my ranking, it’s not helped.
“But finally I found this cue, only had it a few days but I actually like it.
“I feel like I can get used to it, so roll on next season.”
