Sunnyvale Community Services is aiming to collect 2,500 backpacks for local K-12 students by Aug. 1. The annual Ready to Learn Program is designed to ensure that low-income students start the school year equipped with new backpacks and supplies.

The goal for this year’s drive is 1,000 backpacks for K-4 students and 1,500 backpacks for students in grades 5-12. For the former group, character backpacks like Disney and superheroes are the most popular. Among the latter group, plain-colored backpacks in black, gray and blue are highly requested, with Jansport being the preferred brand.

New backpacks can be delivered or shipped directly to to Sunnyvale Community Services, 1160 Kern Ave. Donations can be dropped off Monday, Tuesday, Thursday or Friday 9 a.m.-noon and 12:30-4 p.m.

Summer Movie Series

Sunnyvale’s Summer Movie Series kicks off Friday, Aug. 1, with “Toy Story” at Raynor Park, 1565 Quail Ave. The family-friendly films begin around 7:40 p.m.; the snack bar opens at 7 p.m. Attendees can also bring their own snacks and should bring blankets or lawn chairs to sit on.

Other movies in the series are “Finding Nemo,” Friday, Aug. 8,  at Columbia Park, 789 Morse Ave.; “Monsters, Inc.,” Friday, Aug. 15, at De Anza Park, 1150 Lime Drive; and “Shrek 2,” Friday, Aug. 22 at Murphy Park, 260 N. Sunnyvale Ave.
