A northwest Indiana man drowned after he was electrocuted while trying to retrieve an object at Marina Shores in Portage, Indiana, law enforcement said.
The victim was identified as 21-year-old Gabriel Gonzalez, of Hebron, according to the Indiana Department of Natural Resources. Gabriel and his brother, Francis, were nearby when an object belonging to another boat owner fell into the water at the marina, the DNR said.
Gabriel entered the water to retrieve the object, and after doing so, entered a field of electricity before going under the surface, authorities said. Gabriel’s brother saw him go under the water and jumped in to rescue him, but also suffered an electrical shock.
A good Samaritan threw a flotation device to the brother, pulling him to safety, according to the DNR. He was transported to an area hospital and later released. Once the water was determined to be safe, divers from the Portage Fire Department entered, pulled out Gabriel and performed lifesaving measures, officials said.
Gabriel was pronounced dead at an area hospital, authorities said. The Porter County Coroner’s Office performed an autopsy, which determined his cause of death to be drowning secondary to electrocution.
The manner of death was ruled accidental.
The likely source of electricity in the water was a piece of equipment belonging to a nearby slip holder, the DNR stated. No additional electrical fields were found following an inspection.
Conservation officers urge the public to never enter the water near a dock with electrical power due to the risk of drowning and electrocution.
