IND vs ENG 3rd Test: Brendon McCullum sends SOS to Lord’s pitch curator after Edgbaston thrashing ...Middle East

Sport by : (Inside sport) -

The Bazballers failed to take advantage of the greatest pitch for batting at Edgbaston. They were outbatted by Shubman Gill & Co, handing them a 336-run defeat. England coach and captain duo of Brendon McCullum and Ben Stokes have learned from their mistakes. Despite home conditions, outbatting India remains a risk as India’s bowling attack is a notch above England’s. Hence, England have not only added Gus Atkinson and Jofra Archer, they have also asked for a Lord’s pitch for the IND vs ENG 3rd Test that would have “something with a bit more pace, a bit more bounce, and maybe a little bit of sideways”.

“It’ll be a blockbuster either way, but I think it’s going to set up for a cracker – especially if there’s plenty of life in it the pitch,” Brendon McCullum told reporters after the Edgbaston defeat.

In the WTC Final 2025 between Australia and South Africa, seamers made merry with Kagiso Rabada and Pat Cummins both bagging a fifer each. Australia were bowled out for 212, batting first. In response, South Africa folded for 138 in their first innings. Batting got a little better in the 3rd innings but Australia could only score 207 and South Africa chased 282 without any hiccups.

Archer-Atkinson at Lord’s

Lord’s could have a similar pitch to trouble Indian batters, who have amassed 1849 runs in four innings so far. Lord’s pitch for the IND vs ENG 3rd Test won’t be flat like Leeds or Edgbaston. McCullum has already added Gus Atkinson after Jofra Archer to bolster England’s fatigued pace battery that bowled without much success.

“Jofra will certainly be available for selection. Our seamers have gone two Tests on the spin and we’ve got a short turnaround before we head down to HQ. We’ll let the dust settle on this one, but Jofra is looking fit, he’s looking strong, he’s looking ready to go, and he’ll come into calculations. It’s hugely exciting,” McCullum said.

With Mark Wood still recovering, England have pinned their hopes on the express pace of Archer, who last played a Test match back in 2021. However, as Archer has recovered from a nagging elbow injury, he will be key to England’s success against India’s strong batting line-up.

Archer has played just one Test match at Lord’s against Australia in 2019. While Atkinson has never played a Test against India, he has a great record at Lord’s. In four innings, Atkinson has taken 19 wickets, including three fifers, at an average of 10.94 and a strike rate of 15.9. If both play together with Chris Woakes, they can trouble India. England have won 59 out of 145 Tests at the Lord’s, including 12 out of 19 matches against India.

India at Lord’s

Even though India have had great memories at Lord’s, they have won only 3 Tests out of 19 at the venue. But with two wins in their last four matches at the venue, India are not to be taken lightly. With Shubman Gill confirming Jasprit Bumrah’s return at Lord’s, life could be equally difficult for England batters.

“We will see what kind of wicket they are giving at Lord’s. I don’t think they will give such a flat wicket. This is my feeling. But we will go there and take a decision. We will see what kind of wicket it is, what is the best possible combination,” Shubman Gill said after India’s win in Birmingham.
