There wasn’t a dry eye in the Cobolli corner of No.2 Court at Wimbledon on Monday.
Flavio Cobolli’s family, including his coach dad, were overcome with emotion as the Italian earned his first ever Grand Slam quarter-final with victory over one-time major winner Marin Cilic.
Cobolli is in the last eight of the men’s singles competition at WimbledonAFP He went straight over to his emotional family after his win was confirmedAFPA mature performance from the 23-year-old saw him claim a 6-4 6-4 6-7 (4-7) 7-6 (7-3) victory at SW19 against a man who claimed the scalp of fourth seed Jack Draper earlier in the tournament.
Cobolli’s composure in the final stages of the match was in stark contrast to that of his father Stefano when the win was sealed, who was seen in tears once his son’s victory was confirmed.
Other members of Cobolli’s family were also seen bearing their emotions after his victory.
Cobolli’s previous best at Grand Slams was the third round at the Australian, French and US Opens and he credits the encouraging pep talk of his loved ones for helping him break new ground, especially his father.
“They always told me that they believed that I was made for this kind of match,” Cobolli said in his post-match press conference.
“I think it’s true because I love to play against a big player; a legend of our sport. On a big stage, this kind of tournament.
“Now I’m really emotional because this is a day that I will never forget. I played a really good match today, I’m very proud of myself and my attitude on court.”
He continued: “They [my family] cried. Since I was young, they always let me play. They helped me grow up like this so I think it’s really important to me.
“My dad is also my coach so it’s something different to a normal player… it’s helped me a lot.
“For sure it’s tough, but having my father and my family here is something special.”

After being given a first-set fright by Alex De Minaur, the Serbian setting an unwanted piece of history in the process, Djokovic turned on the grit and class to claim a four-set victory, winning 1-6 6-4 6-4 6-4 on Centre Court.
Cobolli’s press conference came before the outcome of Djokovic vs De Minaur was decided but he was keen to not get to wrapped up in the enormity of the occasion.
“I want to win like I won in the first four rounds,” he remarked. “I want to play my game.
“I don’t want to think about the other player. I want to think about myself.
“I want to have fun every point I play in this kind of stage.”
