England’s campaign against India in the ongoing series has been a tale of two contrasting fortunes. One is, where the players are chipping in with the bat and the ball, and the other, where players just don’t seem good enough. Opener Zak Crawley belongs to the latter. In the current series, he has returned with scores of 4, 65, 19, 0.
In his column for The Daily Telegraph, former England skipper Michael Vaughan launched a scathing attack on Zak Crawley, calling him the “the luckiest cricketer”, to represent the country. “In my time watching, playing for and covering England, he is the player luckiest to have won as many caps as he has,” Vaughan wrote. “He has to count himself fortunate to have played 56 games, whilst scoring just five hundreds, and averaging 31.”
Vaughan also spoke about the change in technique, that Crawley has shown here. “I would love to know why this week, with Bumrah not playing, he suddenly moved two inches outside off stump in his stance,” Vaughan said. “Instead, he got out in both innings driving with half a bat, with his left foot staying down the middle of the stumps.”
Vaughan further criticised the player for his poor decision making, that has hampered his run-scoring. “That is a mindset issue; he is so concerned about the straight ball, and being lbw or bowled, that he has got out chasing wide balls in his last three innings.”
“Crawley is so exasperating because he has the game. He plays some glorious shots… But he has to score more runs at the top of the order.” The ex-captain finally summed it up by saying, that England were totally outclassed in the second Test by India, and the performance has left him worried. “If we are honest, England have been absolutely hammered this week … It was a performance that worried me greatly.”
