Who wants to try a new restaurant?
In San Diego’s neighborhoods, you can ask yourself that question more than a few times a month, any month.
According to city data, at least a few new businesses open every month with a business tax certificate identifying them as a restaurant. Since 2021, most months have seen more than a handful of new restaurants.
(Note, these numbers show just the businesses licensed as full- or limited-service restaurants. Other businesses like snack bars, drinking establishments and mobile food services push the numbers higher.)
With the downtown and Barrio Logan community planning districts, it’s clear new restaurants are popping up in downtown San Diego. For the Downtown News area, here’s the trend over the past four years:
