Teddi Mellencamp has an impassioned message for any critics of her decision to foster a pet or date men while battling cancer.
“We’re foster and a puppy and it’s the best puppy in the world,” Mellencamp, 43, said on the Wednesday, June 11, episode of iHeartRadio’s “Two T’s in a Pod” podcast. “He is amazing, and his name is Maverick. He’s so beautiful. I love him so much.”
The Real Housewives of Beverly Hills alum also noted that people “have been coming” for her about deciding to get a dog and dating, respectively.
“[They say that], ‘The only thing she should be worried about right now are her kids and staying alive,’” Mellencamp said. “‘How can she be dating?’”

Mellencamp filed for divorce from Edwin Arroyave, with whom she shares three children, in November 2023, months before learning that she had multiple brain tumors. She had emergency surgery in February and is now undergoing other forms of treatment.
“I can tell all of you [to] f*** off because there’s not a day that she’s not worried about her health or getting better and doing everything that [she] can do,” Mellencamp’s podcast cohost, Tamra Judge, added. “Like, shut the f*** up. If you want to date, like, life doesn’t stop because you have cancer.”
Mellencamp responded, noting that both having a dog and dating are ways to “stay busy” and avoid bouts of depression.
“I’m not going on dates while my kids are, like, sitting here, looking up [and] waiting to hang out with me,” she said, noting she and Arroyave, 48, have joint, 50-50 custody. “I would like to say that [the criticism] doesn’t bother me, but it does, like, when people wrote, ‘Doesn’t she know she has terminal cancer? Why the f*** would she even be dating anyone?”

Mellencamp further pointed out that her doctor, who follows her on social media, “doesn’t want [her] to think about [her] cancer as terminal.”
“‘Just because that happened to somebody’s friend’s aunt’s brother’s friend doesn’t mean that’s what happening to you,’” she recalled of her oncologist’s comments. “‘You should be going and having fun and trying to laugh and doing your thing.’”
While Mellencamp has primarily stopped checking her comments, it got particularly “overwhelming” at one point.
“I want to fight back, and then I’m, like, ‘Stop, say nothing, stop reading [and] stop looking,’” she added. “I’m doing better. I’m, at least, feeling better in the way that I’m working out four or five times a week [and] fostering this puppy has been really nice. It’s given the kids a lot of happiness.”
