Dolly Parton once revealed that filming the 1982 musical comedy The Best Little Whorehouse in Texas was a difficult experience because she was dealing with an extended illness and personal problems at the time.
The country music legend, who died on August 25, 2026, at age 80, discussed the production during a July 1984 interview with Andy Warhol and Maura Moynihan for Interview magazine.
Parton starred alongside Burt Reynolds and Jim Nabors in the movie, which was adapted from the Broadway musical of the same name. Although she was pleased with the film’s success, she admitted that making it was far from enjoyable.
“Well, Whorehouse was not fun,” Parton said. “I loved Burt Reynolds and Jim Nabors and all those people, but at that particular time I was ill, and coming from a Broadway play, we already had everything against us.”
The subject came up after Parton spoke positively about working with Sylvester Stallone on the 1984 movie Rhinestone.
When Warhol asked whether The Best Little Whorehouse in Texas had been less enjoyable, Parton explained why the earlier production had been challenging.
Moynihan pointed out that the movie had received positive reviews.
“I was happy with the success of it; it was just a hard one to do,” Parton responded.
The singer also discussed the illness that affected her during that period.
“I’d never really been sick in my life until a couple of years ago, and then I was sick for 18 months to two years,” she told Warhol.
Parton said she believed her health problems were connected to emotional difficulties and major changes in her personal and professional relationships.
“It was brought on by a lot of emotional problems that I was having,” she explained. “I had to make a lot of decisions with a lot of people I had been with for years and years, and we were not helping each other emotionally.”
The singer said the relationships had been professionally successful but had become difficult to maintain.
“We did great business together, but it was just very hard,” Parton continued. “I just had to shuffle a lot of things around in my life and make some decisions that were very painful, and I’m a very sensitive person.”
When Moynihan asked whether those decisions included firing people, Parton confirmed that they did.
She explained that she had always handled her own hiring and firing decisions, but family problems complicated the situation.
“But in this particular case, I was going through a lot of problems with family and stuff,” she said.
Parton also showed her sense of humor during the interview when Moynihan asked how many wigs she owned.
“I don’t know, I’ve got better things to do than count them,” Parton replied. “But I wear one every day of the week, so probably 365.”
Despite the challenges she experienced while filming The Best Little Whorehouse in Texas, the movie remained one of Parton’s best-known Hollywood projects.
Her film career also included 9 to 5 (1980) and Steel Magnolias (1989).
