A 22-year-old suburban man was charged with murder after police say he shot and killed a woman inside the Walmart where she worked in Hammond, Indiana, earlier this week.
According to the Hammond Police Department, Dorian Kevon Robertson, of Joliet, was charged with murder in the deadly shooting, which unfolded Tuesday morning inside the Walmart North Supercenter store, at 1100 5th Avenue.
Robertson was expected to make his first court appearance Thursday morning, the Lake County prosecutor’s office said.
Police were called to store around 9 a.m. after an off-duty Hammond police officer working store security reported a shooting had taken place and a suspect was in custody.
A preliminary investigation revealed Dakota Norwood, 21, of Chicago was working at the store when a conversation she was having with Robertson escalated and turned physical.
Police allege Robertson then pulled out a gun and shot Norwood multiple times. She died from her injuries.
Authorities said Robertson and Norwood had been involved in a relationship, but the nature and length of their relationship remains under investigation.
In a statement Hammond police extended condolences to Norwood’s family, friends and coworkers.
