Joel Klatt understands the pressure facing James Franklin at Penn State this fall. In fact, the popular FOX broadcaster is ready to identify a major “boiling point” for the 2025 season.
With June finally here, Klatt has been ranking the pressure indexes facing head coaches throughout college football. When it comes to Franklin, Klatt is ready to say “it is time” for his breakthrough moment with the Nittany Lions.
“For James Franklin, it’s time, and everybody around that program knows it. He knows it, his coordinators know it, even the new one, Jim Knowles,” said Klatt.
Overall, Klatt likes what has been established in Happy Valley. However, he’s not backing away from the fact that Franklin has continually fallen flat in the matchup games, particularly when he faces Ohio State or Michigan in recent seasons.
“This is a program that has built itself on such solid footing over the last several years… and yet, here’s the problem: Penn State, under James Franklin, still doesn’t have that win in recent vintage against a team that maybe they are similar to or matched up with or even an underdog to,” Klatt said. “I would call it a matchup game. When talent is equated, what has generally happened is that Penn State has fallen short.”

This season, fans will not have to wait long for the “boiling point game,” with Klatt highlighting the Sept. 27 visit from reigning Big Ten champion Oregon. The Ducks beat Penn State in Indianapolis last season, but the Nittany Lions get a White Out at home for the rematch this year.
“As good as Oregon has been, you would say the talent is equated in this matchup, in particular with all of these older players that Penn State is bringing back. If Penn State loses that game, all anyone is going to be talking about is that James Franklin can’t win these games, because that’s the slow-boiling narrative going into the season,” predicted Klatt. “… He’s got to win that game.
“If you don’t beat Oregon, at home, in the White Out, you’re like ‘Oh no, is this going to work?’ Again, it’s time. You don’t want to put that on your shoulders in November in the ‘Shoe at Ohio State.”
Is this the year that the Nittany Lions finally break through and win championships under Franklin? Penn State has not won the B1G Championship since 2016, and it certainly feels like this will be Franklin’s best team to date.
