Boys volleyball

Severance 3, Denver West 0, in Severance: Severance emphatically improved to 2-1 on the season with this 25-9, 25-12, 25-14 win. Sophomore Austin Bright and senior Olek Klimik each had eight kills. Seniors Gabe Schneekloth and Matt Zenger had seven aces apiece. Schneekloth also had 20 assists.

Baseball

Roosevelt 8, Greeley Central 1, in Greeley: Roosevelt controlled this season opener, which also served as both teams’ Class 4A/3A Longs Peak opener. The Rough Riders led the game throughout, going up 2-1 in the first inning. Already leading 4-1, Roosevelt put away the game with five runs in the top of the sixth. The Rough Riders out-hit Greeley Central 13-1. Junior Brady Mylander pitched six of seven innings for Roosevelt, allowing one unearned run on one hit, striking out 14 and walking four. Junior Kayden Bryant hit 2 for 4 with three RBI and two doubles. Lupe Loma-Arteaga had the Wildcats’ only hit.

Greeley West 8, Gateway 4, in Aurora: Greeley West got off to a strong start to its season, leading 5-0 midway through the fifth inning. Sophomore Enrique Martinez led the way, hitting 3 for 5 with four RBI and a double. The Spartans out-hit Gateway 11-10.

Pueblo County 10, Severance 5, in Pueblo: Severance fell to 0-2 on the young season with this nonleague loss. Pueblo County immediately took control, leading 3-0 after one inning. The Silver Knights rallied back, taking a short-lived 5-4 lead with two runs in the top of the sixth. But, the Hornets slammed the door with six runs in the bottom of the sixth. Senior Auggie Dominguez led Severance, hitting 1 for 4 with two RBI and a run. Domanick Estrella-Torres and Tyson Smith each had two hits, a run and a double.

Jefferson Academy 12, Weld Central 7, in Gilcrest: Weld Central was plagued by a slow start, falling behind 4-0 after one inning and 8-2 after two. Despite the loss, Rebels sophomore Luke Witzel and junior Lucas Johann each had two RBI. Weld Central fell to 0-1.

Boys basketball

No. 15 University 67, No. 2 Peak to Peak 62, OT, in Lafayette: In this 4A state tournament second round game/regional final, University scored the biggest upset of the state tournament so far, going on the road to knock off one of the top postseason favorites in this dramatic overtime affair. The Bulldogs had a slight lead, 24-21, at halftime. Peak to Peak (22-3) clawed back to send the game into overtime. University controlled the overtime period with a 14-9 run. Juniors John Elbe and Marcus Prestwich led University, scoring 22 and 19 points, respectively. Elbe shot 8 of 16 with three steals. Prestwich shot 5 of 8. The Bulldogs improved to 18-7 and advanced to the Round of 8 at 5:30 p.m. Wednesday at the Denver Coliseum. They will face another upset-minded team, No. 10 Colorado Academy (16-9). The Mustangs defeated No. 7 Sterling 58-49 on the road Saturday.

Boys swimming and diving

Windsor wins home invite, in Windsor: Windsor scored 322 points to top runner-up Rocky Mountain (267) in its nine-team season-opening home invitational. The Wizards earned first-place finishes in two of the 12 events. Windsor junior Elias Everitt was first in the 100 freestyle (50.81). The Wizards also finished first in the 200 freestyle relay (1:36).

Track and field

Local teams compete, in Berthoud: Numerous local teams opened their seasons at the Max Marr Invitational, hosted by Berthoud. Roosevelt’s boys were second (92.9 points) behind Thompson Valley (97.9). The Rough Riders were fourth (69) in the girls team standings. Weld Central’s girls were 17th (7) and its boys placed 18th (4). Frontier Academy’s girls were 19th (1), and its boys finished 11th (26). Resurrection Christian’s boys were 12th (18). Fort Lupton’s boys tied for 20th (2). Roosevelt’s senior standout Taegan Olson placed first in the girls pole vault (12′) and second in the girls 100 (16.56). Rough Riders sophomore Owen Hays was second in the boys 110 hurdles (15.05) and second in the 300 hurdles (40.35). Roosevelt also won the girls 800 relay (1:50.56) and the boys 800 relay (1:31.26). Rough Riders sophomore Janaya Johnson placed third in the 300 hurdles (52.32). Roosevelt was second in the boys 1,600 relay (4:18.25) and the girls 1,600 relay (3:33.48). Rough Riders sophomores Johnson and Bailey Kielian were second (35′ 8.5″) and third (33′ 1.5″), respectively, in the girls triple jump. Roosevelt junior Tayber Konrad was second in boys shot put (50′ 11″). Rough Riders senior Jayden Nohr won the boys long jump (21′ 3.5″). Fort Lupton claimed the top 3 spots in the mixed 100-meter dash, featuring sophomore Trenton Hernandez (1st, 12.73), sophomore Said Martinez (2nd, 13.17) and sophomore Diego Molina-Solis (3rd, 13.31). Hernandez won the mixed 200 (26.13), followed by Roosevelt senior Isaiah Sprague (2nd, 28.25) and Martinez (3rd, 28.55). Resurrection Christian senior Jackson Fagerlin won the boys 800 (1:53.45), one spot ahead of Cougars freshman Lincoln Fagerlin (1:57.07). Frontier Academy senior Amir McDonald was third in the boys 200 (23.01) and third in high jump (5′ 11″).

Greeley West opens season, in Lakewood: Greeley West kicked off its season in the Ivory Moore “We Are Columbine” Invitational at Jefferson County Stadium, which also serves as the home of the state meet in May. The Spartans quartet of junior Madison Munoz, senior Inesia Woods, senior Aria Moroka and sophomore Isabella Allen won the girls 800-meter relay (1:59.84) and the 400 relay (55.70).West also received top 3 placements from Allen (1st, 200, 27.98; 3rd, 100, 13.15), senior Guadalupe Segura (1st, boys discus, 141′ 5″), junior Valeria Calzada (1st, girls shot put, 34′ 5.5″; 1st, girls discus, 110′ 1″) and junior Nickell Karter (2nd, boys high jump, 5′ 6″).

Boys volleyball

Fort Lupton goes 0-4, in Aurora: Fort Lupton dropped a quartet of 2-0 matches to Riverdale Ridge (25-16, 25-8), Regis Jesuit (25-7, 25-15), Cherry Creek (25-9, 25-10) and Fossil Ridge (25-11, 25-17) during Eaglecrest’s home tournament. The Bluedevils fell to 1-4 on the season.
