Chicago Bears' defensive coordinator, the team announced Wednesday.
"I am taking a step back to take care of my health and family. I appreciate the opportunity to work with the Chicago Bears, a storied NFL franchise with a rich history," Williams said in a statement.
"I value the NFL shield and all that it stands for and after taking some time to address my health, I plan to come back and coach again," he added.
Alan Williams, 53, has been away from the Bears since last week with what the team classified as a personal reason.
Williams thanked the McCaskey family as well as Eberflus, general manager Ryan Poles and President Kevin Warren. He also vowed to coach again.
"I value the NFL shield and all that it stands for, and after taking some time to address my health, I plan to come back and coach again," he said.
Williams, 53, was not present with the team last week, citing personal reasons. Instead, Eberflus was the defensive play caller in the team's game against the Tampa Bay Buccaneers. Eberflus is expected to continue to call plays.
Green Bay Packers 38-20 in their first game and 27-17 against the Bucs. The Bears defense has allowed the second-most yards per pass attempt (9.1), behind only the Los Angeles Chargers. They have allowed 554 yards, one of the highest among defenses, and have zero interceptions. They are second to last when it comes to sacks, with just one so far.
Next week they will head to Arrowhead Stadium to face the defending Super Bowl champion Kansas City Chiefs.
On the surface it may seem innocuous. Football coaches, like football players, are humans and they have real personal lives outside the game. Sometimes they need to put football aside to address things in their personal lives.
But things feel different in this case, since the Bears won’t say whether or not Williams is still the team’s defensive coordinator.
“I don't have any update right now,” head coach Matt Eberflus said when asked about Williams’ job status.
Williams is only two games into his second season with the Bears. He has more than three decades of coaching experience, including with Buccaneers, Indianapolis Colts, Minnesota Vikings, and Detroit Lions.
The veteran defensive coach intends to return to coaching after taking some time away, according to both Stroth and Williams’ resignation statement.
