“They have to really dedicate themselves over the course of the week to have success on game day, and fortunately, I do think that our guys, the way we train them, is very demanding and very detailed, with teams like this in mind. You’ve got to have a certain level of detail to your play, know what’s going on, to give yourself a chance against a scheme like this.”
Johnson and Flores will go toe-to-toe for the seventh time in the NFC North on Sunday. The first four meetings came with Johnson as the offensive coordinator in Detroit, and the most recent pair came last season, with Johnson as the head coach of the Bears. Minnesota took the season opener from the Bears on Monday Night Football before Johnson and Chicago got the last laugh against Flores and the Vikings in Week 11, a narrow 19-17 victory in Minnesota. All told, five points separated both games.
As to how Johnson can use the previous six meetings with Flores to prepare for this week, well, he doesn’t believe he can.
“You don’t,” Johnson said with a chuckle. “[Flores] has been in this division for three years now, and you’d like to think he’s put everything he can possibly do on tape until you play him next and realize that he hasn’t yet. So, it’ll be something new; it always is with him. That’s what makes him such a good coordinator. That’s a great challenge; it really is. You have a lot of fun on game day. Now, the week of preparation is not so much fun; there’s a lot of back and forth that goes into it.”

One thing is for certain, though—Caleb Williams is a much different quarterback than the one who was limited to 210 yards and a touchdown in last year’s first meeting, and even different from the one who threw for 193 yards and no touchdowns in their second meeting in Minnesota.
What was clear to me in dissecting Williams and the offense’s performance in Week 1 is that Williams is light-years ahead of last year in getting through his progressions, seeing the field, and getting the football to the right spot. Johnson believes Williams’ advanced knowledge of the offense and his attention to detail in his preparation are slowing the game down for him, which in turn helps him see the field better and make the right decision more often.
“For the last year and a half, he continues to play with more anticipation, and he understands what we’re trying to get done. Our visits over the course of the week, once we get into a game week, are very good conversations that we have. He asks the right questions, as far as I’m concerned. I mentioned that the day before the game last week, he was regurgitating everything that we had talked about over the course of the week, so you could tell that he was in a really good spot.”
That’s good, because he’ll need it on Sunday, when the pressure will be turned up against the blitz-happy Vikings defense.
