Druski’s Best ‘SNL’ Sketches Had Him Singing Through a Proposal Gone Wrong & In a Hip-Hop Parody

Druski made his SNL hosting debut on an episode that had The Strokes as musical guest, but it was Druski crooning “she said yes” at the just the right comedic moment that was the real earworm of the show.

“Proposal” and “Golden Age of Hip-Hop,” two of the funniest sketches to make it to air Saturday night (Nov. 7), had the SNL host showing he’s got a knack for musical comedy — and some vocal talent.

In “Proposal,” SNL‘s Jeremy Culhane plays a man asking his girlfriend (Sarah Sherman) to marry him, and things don’t quite go as planned. But since he assumed she’d say yes and went all-out on making the proposal an unforgettable moment, the show goes on for his hired entertainment — Druski, expertly leading an awkward musical finale that was meant to celebrate the engagement.

“I don’t really know how to tell you this, but the next four minutes are about to be really tough,” Culhane says when Sherman turns him down.

And then all eyes (and ears) are on Druski and an ensemble that keeps growing around him as he belts with soul: “She said yes, oh, she said yes/ Can’t wait to see her wearing that dress/ Got down on one knee and she said yes.”

One of the other highlights of the episode was the final sketch, “Golden Age of Hip-Hop,” a TV documentary-style parody telling the story of a “socially conscious hip-hop” group called Lenny & The Street Smart Crew (Druski, James Austin Johnson, Ben Marshall, Kam Patterson and Tommy Brennan). The bit has the Druski-led crew performing songs like “Gangs Ain’t Good (Free Yo Mind)” and “You Can Be My Brother, Friend.”

When Druski was announced as a season 52 host for Saturday Night Live, he got plenty of support from his hip-hop friends. Among those sending him congratulatory comments were Drake, Travis Scott, Quavo and Wheezy.
