PITTSFORD, N.Y. — Jackson Barr received strong community support during his battle with cancer, and now he is giving back to a classmate facing the same fight.
Aidan Murray, a freshman at Pittsford Sutherland, has the same bone cancer Barr had last year. Barr and his family organized the second annual Jackson’s Mafia Pickleball Tournament to help Murray, with the event held at the Fairport Pickleball Club.
Jackson’s friends and family started the tournament last year after his diagnosis with osteosarcoma, raising more than $30,000. Barr is doing well now and said he is excited to compete in this year’s tournament.
“I know what it’s like to be in a shoes, and I think it was really important that he had someone there for him. And I think, I mean, I’m so happy that we could be that,” said Jackson.
“My heart is full, you know? I’m just I’m heartbroken for what they’re going through. But I’m so happy to let Jackson and I and our family can guide them through this path,” said Renee Barr, Jackson’s mother.
The Jackson’s Mafia Foundation now helps other local families facing childhood cancer. About 200 people attended the tournament, which included divisions for all ages and experience levels.
Much of the money raised is going to Aidan’s family to help with travel and medical expenses, while the rest will support other local families.
