Lawyer Who Represented Duane ‘Keffe D’ Davis in Tupac Shakur’s Murder Trial Dead at 55

Michael Sanft, the lawyer who represented Duane ‘Keffe D’ Davis, who was convicted of orchestrating the murder of Grammy-nominated artist Tupac Shakur, has died at 55.

He was found dead in his Las Vegas home; multiple outlets, including Fox 5 Vegas, KTNV, and KSNV, reported on Friday, Nov. 6.

His cause and manner of death are still pending, with KTNV further reporting that homicide detectives are investigating, looking at surveillance footage, and screening for drugs. However, police told the Las Vegas Review-Journal that his death did not appear suspicious.

Sanft recently represented Duane “Keffe D” Davis, who was convicted in August for his role in Shakur’s murder and was sentenced to 40 years to life. After the sentencing, Sanft spoke with Fox 5 Vegas about the verdict.

“We had the best team possible in this case, from the motion practice work on this appeal to our investigator to our firm here at SOS Injury. We all did our part. I don’t see what I could’ve done differently,” he told the outlet.

“I hate losing,” he added. “I hate losing, and I was disappointed because I did not believe the jury gave it its proper due.”

Sanft and Davis planned to appeal the conviction, having filed a motion on Oct. 30.

Shakur was killed near the Las Vegas Strip on Sept. 7, 1996, while riding in a BMW with Death Row Records co-founder Marion “Suge” Knight. A gunman riding in a white Cadillac opened fire, killing Shakur. Knight survived, only sustaining minor injuries. Prosecutors alleged Davis orchestrated the murder after Shakur was involved in a fight with his nephew earlier that night. Jurors only took three hours to deliberate before coming back with a verdict.
