On Thursday, November 5, state and local leaders gathered in Brooklyn Park, Minnesota, to officially dedicate Highway 610 as the Hortman Memorial Highway, honoring the former House Speaker and her husband, who were killed in a politically motivated attack in June 2025.
Following the dedication, Sophie shared an emotional message on Threads about the significance of seeing her parents remembered by the community, alongside a set of photos.
“Sometimes it feels like all I do is miss my parents. It’s nice when I’m reminded that other people remember them, and it feels less lonely on days like today. Wish you guys were here,” she wrote.
Sophie and her brother, Colin Hortman, attended Thursday’s ceremony alongside Governor Tim Walz, and other state leaders as the new highway signs were unveiled.
The highway holds particular significance for the family. Melissa, who represented Brooklyn Park and Coon Rapids in the Minnesota House for more than two decades, played an instrumental role in securing funding for the highway’s completion and the road connects communities in the district she once represented.
“My hope is that many years from now, people will be driving around this community and wonder, ‘why is this road called the Hortman Highway?’” Rep. Zack Stephenson said during the dedication, according to CCX Media. “And they’ll look it up online and they’ll read the amazing story of Mark and Melissa Hortman. And that way, their memory will live on for generations to come.”
For the Hortman family, the dedication offered an opportunity to see their parents’ contributions recognized by the community they called home.
“It’s every day for us,” Sophie said of missing her parents during the ceremony, according to Minnesota Public Radio. “So to know that her accomplishments will be remembered and our family will be remembered, it’s something that’s very meaningful.”
Melissa and Mark Hortman were killed at their Brooklyn Park home on June 14, 2025, in an attack authorities described as politically motivated. Their dog, Gilbert, was also killed. Vance Boelter was arrested following a nearly 43-hour manhunt and later pleaded guilty in federal court to the murders and related crimes. He was sentenced to two consecutive life sentences plus 40 years in prison.
