He’ll be taking home various player/prospect of the year honors where he can beat out Owen Ayers, and that’s mostly on the strength of Josiah Hartshorn’s explosion at the plate in his debut season. The 19-year-old switch-hitter raked his way up from Low-A to Double-A, all in his first professional season.
But even that perhaps undersells how impressive his year was, because, it turns out, he was also outstanding with the glove:

— South Bend Cubs (@SBCubs) November 2, 2026The talk continues. Josiah Hartshorn (1B) is a 2026 Minor League Baseball @RawlingsSports Gold Glove Award winner! Hartshorn recorded 440 total chances in 58 games for Myrtle Beach, @SBCubs & @smokiesbaseball, posting 407 putouts & 28 assists for a .989 fielding percentage. t.co/Q4dIiDiwzw
— Myrtle Beach Pelicans (@Pelicanbaseball) November 2, 2026As you can see, the award there is for all of the minor leagues, which makes the win all the more impressive. As you can also see, Hartshorn won for his work at first base, where he split his time. He was also impressive in the outfield, including center field, and I expect that was a factor in him getting this award.
With the bat clearly being advanced for his age, and with him being close to physically maxed, it’s not impossible that Josiah Hartshorn could work his way up to the big leagues as soon as mid-2027, when he’ll be just 20 years old. I don’t know that I’d put that expectation on his schedule, but I’m just saying, it’s pretty obviously plausible.
As for where Hartshorn plays when he arrives in the big leagues, I expect it’ll be a combination of ability and need. Knowing that he can play quality corner outfield defense AND passable center field defense AND quality first base defense gives you options, either in a long-term role or simply moving around as needed/available. We know all too well how quickly things on the big league roster can change, so there’s little use in forcing any kind of permanent defensive spot on Hartshorn any time soon, especially when he can clearly still hit well when he’s moving around.
