McLaren brings 2027 thinking into its Brazil upgrade push

McLaren is refusing to let its recent dip in form derail its development ambitions, with the reigning Constructors’ champions bringing a fresh batch of upgrades to São Paulo this weekend as they look to revive the MCL40’s competitiveness and lay important foundations for 2027.

The Woking outfit will introduce revisions across several key aerodynamic areas, including the front and rear wings and elements of the floor, in a determined effort to extract more performance from its current package while gathering valuable knowledge for next season.

There is particular significance attached to the revised front wing, whose underlying concept is expected to carry over to McLaren’s 2027 challenger.

It is another indication that, even as the current campaign enters its closing stages, the team is already looking to bridge the gap between its immediate ambitions and its longer-term technical plans.

The latest developments follow an intensive period of aerodynamic work at McLaren, which enjoyed a significant performance boost after introducing a substantial upgrade package at the Hungarian Grand Prix.

That transformation helped Lando Norris secure consecutive victories in Hungary and Zandvoort, although the team struggled to maintain that level of competitiveness in subsequent rounds.

Further packages arrived in Baku and Austin, but McLaren has nevertheless found itself increasingly on the back foot against its main rivals, Mercedes, Ferrari and Red Bull.

Chief technical officer for aerodynamics Peter Prodromou nevertheless believes there is still meaningful performance to unlock, with the latest revisions forming part of a broader development strategy.

“We’ve got some updates coming to the car across the front wing, rear wing and some floor components as part of our normal development cycle,” he explained.

“The aim is to make up ground, improve our performance over the remaining races and build momentum into next year.”

São Paulo offers an encouraging setting in which to put that ambition to the test. Interlagos has traditionally been a productive hunting ground for McLaren, while its varied characteristics should provide a useful indication of whether the latest aerodynamic refinements are delivering the intended gains.

“Sao Paulo has been a good circuit for us in the past and is a fairly representative track, so we’re hopeful these upgrades can help us take another step towards the front,” added Prodromou.

Third place in the Constructors’ battle remains within reach

There is also a pressing championship incentive behind McLaren’s continued development push.

The team trails Red Bull by 17 points in the fight for third in the Constructors’ standings, but the recent points distribution makes for uncomfortable reading: McLaren has collected just 59 points across the last five rounds, compared with 152 for its Milton Keynes rival.

Prodromou insists the latest developments are not simply an exercise in preparing for the next regulatory era, with McLaren determined to make its remaining races count.

“The season isn't over yet: these upgrades are designed to improve the car now and help us in our fight for third in the championship,” explained the McLaren engineer.

“While the learning we take from these upgrades will feed into next year’s development, we also expect to carry over the concept of the new front wing into the launch specification of next year’s car.”

With the championship fight still offering something tangible to chase and the technical groundwork for 2027 already taking shape, Interlagos represents another opportunity for the team to turn development promise into on-track progress.
