King Charles found a way to laugh off his recent viral umbrella incident, making a playful reference to the rainstorm that left him soaked during his Caribbean tour.
The 77-year-old monarch mentioned the moment while giving a speech in Antigua and Barbuda on November 3, as part of his address to the government of the country. During the speech, he joked about his role as Head of the Commonwealth while addressing government leaders.
During his November 3 speech (via People), Charles discussed the diversity of the 56 countries that make up the Commonwealth, pointing out how their climates differ. He quipped that some countries are famous for their snow, some for their deserts, and some for having the most perfect weather of all year round.
“It is one of the few organizations able to unite countries famous for snow, countries famous for deserts, and, most of all, countries whose citizens are utterly convinced they enjoy perfect weather all year round,” Charles noted.
The Monarch then added, “Of course, part of my role as Head of the Commonwealth might well be to provide that umbrella for you all.” The comment got a smile from Charles as he made a rather light reference to the incident which had been all over the place earlier in the trip.

His comments came after a moment that took place on November 1 when Charles and Camilla were at the celebrations for Antigua and Barbuda’s 45th anniversary of independence. A sudden and very heavy downpour caught the royal couple outside. Camilla was promptly handed a clear umbrella, but Charles was left standing in the rain. He was waving his arms around at his aides in a most frustrated manner, clearly expecting one of them to go and get him an umbrella.
He eventually got an umbrella before descending from the dais to inspect the troops.
The umbrella incident was one of the more amusing moments of the trip, which also included some very serious discussions about Britain’s history and its role in the transatlantic slave trade.
At another speech in Antigua and Barbuda on November 3, Charles spoke of his personal sadness at the suffering of slavery. He also touched on the importance of education, employment and the need to build stronger partnerships across the Commonwealth.
