Dancing With the Stars’ Disney Night brought several fairytale dances to the ballroom, but one of them was mistaken for a wedding story by judge Derek Hough.
On the Nov. 2 edition of the ABC celebrity ballroom competition, Hough reacted to Connor Wood and Rylee Arnold dancing a Waltz as Flynn Rider and Princess Rapunzel from Disney’s Tangled. The veteran judge pointed to the couple’s chemistry as he made a comment that left some fans flabbergasted.
“I feel like I just watched a first dance at a wedding,” Hough said. “I was so happy for the new couple, that was so beautiful.”
Wood, 31, and Arnold, 21, with a serious boyfriend, laughed uncomfortably as Hough continued on with his critique.
On social media, fans reposted the clip and offered up reactions.
“Derek, that was an insane comment to make,” one commenter captioned an Instagram post that included Hough‘s remark.
“MY JAW DROPPED,” another agreed.
Others noted that Hough’s comment only fueled online buzz about Wood and Arnold’s relationship and was disrespectful to Arnold’s boyfriend, Brigham Young University football player Walker Lyons.
“After their dance I was thinking (knowing full well she has a bf) ‘I felt like I’m watching them fall in love,’” one fan wrote.
“I felt so bad for her bf after that comment,” another agreed.
“Yeah this is hard for both of them- doesn’t help the online speculation,” another commenter added.
Some fans defended Hough’s comment, with one writing, “I think I get what Derek was saying. Like the chemistry between them when they were dancing was unreal! And they told the love story of Flynn and Rapunzel perfectly. I don’t think it was supposed to be a personal comment. I think it was a comment to how well they danced and played the role, which is super important with a theme like Tangled!”
Dancing With the Stars fans have been commenting on Wood and Arnold’s chemistry ever since Week 2 when they gazed at one another during a sultry tango.
One X user wrote, “That tango had more chemistry than my last three situationships.”
But Arnold told TV Insider it was “just dancing.”
“I’ve grown up being close to a man’s face since I was 10 years old,” the pro dancer shared. “Honestly, it’s just second nature. To have that chemistry helps you get through the dance, get through the steps. Again, for me, I grew up doing this.”
Wood has also commented on his connection with Arnold, telling Entertainment Weekly, “I think it was an act of God that we were paired together. We don’t really have any missed connects. I was just saying that we have this connection that isn’t really faulted by like, ‘Oh, I can’t get this step,’ or ‘I can’t do this move. ‘I don’t see myself doing that dance at all, and then we get through it, slowly.”
Wood does not appear to be in a relationship right now. Last year, he told Elite Daily he was focusing on his career as a comedian and podcaster. “I’m not dating,” he said at the time. “I’m so focused on myself. I’m like an absent father to the dating apps right now. I haven’t been swiping.”
As for Arnold, she recently celebrated her second anniversary of dating Walker.
“2 years with you, I’m the luckiest!!! I love you so much @walkerlyons,” she captioned an Instagram slideshow of her and Lyons on October 22.
