Sylvester Stallone’s first marriage to Sasha Czack in 1974 was anything but a proper Hollywood wedding.
The veteran has always been vocal about his struggles and how he became a movie star. There was a time when Stallone was broke and had nothing. Now, the actor is opening up about that particular time of his life when he didn’t even have enough money to buy a suit for his wedding and had to borrow a gangster suit from one of his movies.
In his memoir, titled The Steps, the superstar noted that he actually borrowed a gangster suit from his film Capone for the occasion because he didn’t have money to buy a designer suit for his first marriage. Their income was going towards the basics (rent, groceries, car repairs, etc.). The couple simply couldn’t afford a wedding dress or any formal wear for the occasion.
“We planned a marriage ceremony in December while I was still filming Capone. Sasha wanted to buy a wedding dress, but we couldn’t afford it. All of our money went to rent, groceries and repairs on our car. We were barely surviving,” Stallone wrote in his memoir (via People)
Shockingly, his bride, Czack, had to make her dress for the occasion and had to stitch one out of an old curtain from their rental house. Meanwhile, the Rocky Balboa star went to the wardrobe department at the studio and borrowed a double-breasted gangster suit.
Stallone noted, “For my part, I had zero dress clothes, so I borrowed my double-breasted gangster suit from the Capone wardrobe department — spats, shoes and all. With my greased-back period haircut, I looked like I fell out of a time machine.”
The ceremony was just as unorthodox. The couple weren’t members of any normal church so they went to the Association of All Religions and had Reverend Dingleman do the ceremony. Andrea Eastman, a friend of Stallone’s manager Jane Oliver, provided her own house as the venue.
It was a very small gathering indeed, Oliver and her husband Valentine Sherry being the couple’s witnesses. The vows were exchanged whilst they were sitting in rocking chairs in front of the fire.
Published by William Morrow on September 29, The Steps charts Stallone’s journey from arriving in New York in 1969 to Rocky winning Best Picture in 1977. It goes well beyond the success that made him a name for millions and looks at the difficult childhood, the years of struggle and the sheer determination that forged his Hollywood career.
The book also looks at the creative journey of Rocky, the character who changed his life, and the sheer tenacity required to get the film made on his terms. There’s a great deal of reflection on the ups and downs of the process, and it’s presented as a story of ambition, hard work and sheer grit.
The wedding memory is a nice little personal touch in that regard and underlines just how down to earth his situation was prior to the arrival of fame as a working actor.
