Eric Dane is revealing behind-the-scenes truths in his posthumous memoir My Book of Days: A Memoir in Moments, where he reveals how his breakup with Alyssa Milano caused the Charmed writers to go “crazy.”
The Grey’s Anatomy and Euphoria star died last spring at the age of 53 from complications related to ALS. He worked on his memoir during the final months of his life, in which he dives into his short-lived relationship with the Charmed actor.
Dane had a crush on the Milano since he was a teenager and ended up dating the actor when he was 28 years old in 2003. It was their real-life romance that led Dane to join Charmed, despite his rule of never wanting to “mix my professional and my personal life. I never date a coworker. As my guys preach, ‘Don’t s— where you eat.’ Words to live by. I stick to that rule. Except once.”
By the time the two were dating, Charmed was well into its height of popularity among fans and in its fifth season. Milano had pull as one of the series’ leading stars and got Dane to join as Jason Dean, her character’s on-screen boss and owner of the Bay Mirror, where Phoebe works. Before joining, Dane had a clear rule that Milano agreed to.
“I’m not really into fantasy stuff, but Alyssa suggests I play her boss in the show. I say no, Alyssa nudges me gently but convincingly, I hesitate, I resist, and then I agree, on one condition,” Dane wrote in his memoir.
He had Milnao swear to “Tell the showrunner and the writers that I can’t deal with anything magic. I’m not waving wands, casting spells, nothing like that. I can exist in reality, with your character. I just can’t get into any supernatural s—.”
Milano had no issue agreeing with Dane and thought it would be extremely fun to be with the actor on set and at home. Dane added that she was right, and it was fun: “Every moment. Every single moment. It really is. Until we break up.”
The two actors continued dating, and Dane soon made his debut in Season 5 of the series. Their on-screen dynamics worked so well that his character’s role was extended into the next season, but their breakup changed everything. Dane revealed in his memoir that it caused the writers to go “crazy.” He felt it was almost a punishment, as his character was given a supernatural storyline he never wanted.
“I have a commitment for only one or two more episodes, but all of a sudden, I’m casting spells, stirring cauldrons, lobbing fireballs, doing a bunch of zany supernatural s— that I never wanted to get near,” he wrote.
In Charmed, Jason learned that Phoebe is a witch, and she becomes possessed by a WWI spy. The storyline had Dane stunned, and he recalled how his character gets kidnapped by Swarm Demons in “Used Karma” and faints. The actor explained it wasn’t hard to act out, as he “nearly fainted” when he read the script himself.
Dane Milano dated briefly in 2003 before calling it quits. It just so happened that the most zany storyline involving Jason was also Dane’s last on Charmed. The series has the two break free from all the chaos at the end of the episode and split up.
