Former Cubs managers Joe Maddon, Dusty Baker named to Hall of Fame ballot

A trio of former Chicago Cubs managers, including Joe Maddon and Dusty Baker, have been named to the Contemporary Baseball Hall of Fame ballot.

The 16-member panel will vote on eight finalists leading up to the December 6 announcement of next year’s class, and along with Lou Piniella, several Cubs skippers have a chance at immortality in Cooperstown.

The announcement appropriately took place on November 2, the 10th anniversary of the Cubs’ 2016 World Series championship. Maddon, who led the team to their first title in 108 seasons, was named as one of the panel’s finalists in an announcement Monday.

Maddon started his managerial career with the Tampa Bay Rays, leading that team to their first-ever World Series appearance in 2008, before signing with the Cubs before the 2015 season. He then led the Cubs to three straight NLCS appearances and a 2016 World Series title, earning 471 victories in his five seasons with the Cubs.

He will be joined on the ballot by Baker, who ranks eighth all-time in MLB history for wins by a manager. He spent the bulk of his managerial career with the San Francisco Giants, leading the team to 840 victories and an appearance in the 2002 World Series. The following season he joined the Cubs, helping the team to their first playoff series win in 95 years when they defeated the Atlanta Braves in the 2003 NLDS.

He won 322 games with the Cubs, and continued his managerial career with multiple stops before winning his first career World Series title with the Houston Astros in 2022.

Piniella won the 1990 World Series with the Cincinnati Reds then had a legendary run at the helm of the Seattle Mariners, including winning a staggering 116 games in the 2001 season.

He joined the Cubs prior to the 2007 season and became the first Cubs manager since Frank Chance to lead the team to back-to-back playoff appearances as the team won division titles in 2007 and 2008. He left the team late in the 2010 season after winning 316 games with the North Siders.

Another notable manager on the list is Bruce Bochy, who had four career World Series rings, including three with the Giants and another with the Texas Rangers. He has 2,252 career managerial wins, good for sixth on the all-time list.

Brian Sabean, who was the architect of those three Giants World Series-winning teams while Bochy was at the helm, is also on the list of finalists, along with former Athletics general manager Sandy Alderson, former Atlanta Braves owner Ted Turner and former MLB player, Yankees broadcaster and National League President Bill White.

The Contemporary Era Committee is made up of 16 members, including Hall of Fame players, MLB executives, media members and historians. A candidate must receive at least 75% of the vote in order to be enshrined in Cooperstown, and the results of the vote will be announced on Sunday, December 6.
