Bulls Stumble Towards Relegation Zone, Paw Talks Benching, and Other Bulls Bullets

Maybe we should just forfeit our Boston Celtics games this season, huh? Can we do that?

After losing by 35 points to Jayson Tatum and co. on Monday, our Bulls returned to TD Garden on Friday for a follow-up obliteration. The final 125-111 margin obscures just how much of a lopsided effort the contest actually was. Boston led by a whopping led by as much as 32 points this go-round, destroying Chicago in all facets.

Joe Mazzulla kept his starters in later than usual because this was an NBA Cup game, and team point differentials matter for tiebreakers.

Most notable on the Bulls front, again, was the ineffectual play of both starting point guard Josh Giddey and starting small forward Matas Buzelis. Their lowest moments arrived against Celtics sixth man Payton Pritchard, who so throttled them with hustle plays and 3-point conversions that he earned an emphatic Joe Mazzulla hug in this five-point swing.

One of the worst 45 seconds of Bulls basketball in recent memory. Giddey turnover, Matas gets put on the floor and gives up an o board putback to Pritchard. Pritchard finished with a game-high 30 points on 9-of-17 shooting from the floor (3-of-9 from distance) and 9-of-9 shooting from the charity stripe.

Giddey and Buzelis again looked terrible. They each finished with respectable double-digit scoring nights, but neither made the kind of impact that could have helped stop the bleeding for the Bulls. Most notably, Buzelis stayed glued to Tiago Splitter’s bench throughout the fourth frame, with Isaac Okoro in for defensive help instead.

The Bulls wrap up their first half-month with a miserable 1-5 record and a -95 cumulative point differential. Not ideal.

    Bulls Bullets — October 31, 2026

Chicago has been so horrible this year that the team looks like it may be headed towards the draft’s dreaded “relegation zone this year. The teams with the league’s three worst records will get poorer lottery odds than clubs with the fourth-through-10th worst records. Only Zach LaVine’s Sacramento Kings look decisively worse. The Bulls are hovering in the same futile neighborhood as the 0-5 Brooklyn Nets, the 1-4 Milwaukee Bucks, the 1-4 New Orleans Pelicans, and the 1-4 LA Clippers. It wasn’t all bad news, though. Noa Essengue notched his first double-digit night ever, scoring 10 points on 3-of-7 shooting from the field and 3-of-5 shooting from the foul line. He also offered plenty of active hustle plays. Both Essengue and two-way signing Tobe Awaka played far more than injured reserve five Zach Collins, who suited up for all of 1:51. Rookie phenom Caleb Wilson continued to impress, notching his sixth straight night of 15 or more points to kick off his inaugural season. He finished with 23 points on 7-of-16 shooting (including 6-of-11 shooting from distance, his most made triples yet) and 3-of-6 shooting from the foul line, five rebounds, four assists, two blocks, and a steal.

    — Ricky O'Donnell (@SBN_Ricky) October 31, 2026 Per K.C. Johnson of Chicago Sports Network, Wilson is now the first rookie since Coby White to nail six or more triples in a game. His individual success and effort, of course, hasn’t seemed to translate to the rest of the current roster — although he doesn’t seem the type to throw others under the bus. After the contest, Wilson spoke to attending reporters at his locker about the team’s horrific start to the regular season.

“I’ve never been a loser in my whole life, so I’m going to try my best to make sure that doesn’t happen. I’m never going to accept being a loser.”Caleb Wilson following the Bulls’ 125-111 loss to the Celtics tonight pic.twitter.com/1O1VAQMRYM

“I’ve never been a loser in my whole life, so I’m going to try my best to make sure that doesn’t happen. I’m not ever going to be accepting losing. This is my job, to be a leader on this team, so it’s all going to start with me. I know that.”

Patrick Williams, the Bulls No. 4 pick in the 2020 NBA Draft, has apparently made peace with being glued to Tiago Splitter’s bench so far this season. The 25-year-old combo forward is in the third season of an indefensible five-year, $90 million deal he inked as a restricted free agent. Last year, he had been shifted to a permanent bench role under Billy Donovan for the first time, but he did average 20.5 minutes a night across 72 healthy games. The Bulls have been so awful to start the season that one wonders if Splitter might reconsider Williams’ involvement. Ahead of the Celtics rematch, Williams chatted with K.C. Johnson of Chicago Sports Network about his role.

“I’m not a bench player. But being a professional is responding when things aren’t going well,” Williams told Johnson. “It’s easy to work hard when things are going well. When it’s not, are you still a hard worker? I am.”

Former Tom Thibodeau-era Human Victory Cigar big man Brian Scalabrine, now a color commentator for NBC Sports Boston’s Celtics broadcasts, revealed during the game that late great Bulls analyst Stacey King popularized his “White Mamba” nickname. Scalabrine was with Chicago from 2010-12. After that, he opted to pursue a broadcasting career with Boston, although Thibodeau reportedly offered him an assistant coach role on his staff.

“Stacey King, the inventor of the White Mamba,” Scalabrine said. “I made a joke, ‘Hey, I’m the White Mamba!’ And he just took it on. It was nuts. He’s a great, great guy. Loves basketball, smart, you could talk to him about back in the day. Man, he was super approachable all the time. I miss him.”

The hits keep coming. In a particularly injury-plagued first week-and-change, the NBA has lost loads of All-Stars to long-term ailments. The latest blow? Per Tim MacMahon of ESPN, All-Star Oklahoma City Thunder power forward/center Chet Holmgren has undergone “a biological treatment” for a torn patellar tendon. He’s slated to miss at least eight-to-10 weeks of action. Oklahoma will now be without three starters in Holmgren, All-NBA small forward Jalen Williams, and shooting guard Cason Wallace. Williams and Wallace may miss the entire year. Reserve shooting guard Alex Caruso could be shelved several weeks with an ankle injury. ESPN’s Shams Charania initially reported that the Thunder intended to sign free agent shooting guard Ochai Agbaji to fill their open roster spot and give them another healthy body. Now, the team intends to reassess its plan for the new addition, and will not sign Agbaji for now.
