Get your Halloween plans in order, folks. The Blackhawks play at noon in Boston! After a scary (bad) performance in Detroit, the Hawks face a Bruins team that’s been really good to start this season — a regular reality early on the schedule for Chicago. Head coach Jeff Blashill was pretty direct with his comments after the loss to the Red Wings. We’ll see if that resonated in the room at lunchtime today. The Blackhawks cancelled their Friday practice, so we’ll have to wait for warm-ups to confirm any tweaks to the lineup.
The Blackhawks are dead last in the NHL on the power play (10 percent success rate). And yet Connor Bedard has three points (one goal, two assists) on the advantage thru his first seven games of the season. Bedard is a point per game player to start and season, and the Hawks are still trying to figure out the wing opposite Roman Kantserov on his line. Scott Powers wrote about that situation on Friday:For one, the Blackhawks continue to find linemates for Bedard. Roman Kantserov seems like a fit, and that could be significant for years to come. But for now, Kantserov is benefiting more from Bedard than the other way around. Kane was brought in to be the playmaker Bedard has been lacking, but they haven’t connected, and Blashill has moved Kane elsewhere in the lineup. In the last few games, Blashill has experimented with Ryan Greene, Teuvo Teräväinen and Ryan Donato on Bedard’s line, and no one has clicked.
Davidson could consider recalling Nick Lardis from Rockford. Lardis had success with Bedard late last season, and Lardis has been finding his offensive game with the IceHogs. That would create another roster decision, likely having to put someone through waivers, but there has to be some urgency.
On that note, Ben Pope’s Friday column for the Chicago Sun-Times brought up an option that has been thrown around frequently lately: why not try Anton Frondell with Bedard and Kantserov? It’s been almost a week since I wrote the Blackhawks need to give him more offensive opportunities. And the Blackhawks are reportedly looking for a more physical forward to complement that line. Ben goes as far as to consider Frondell staying at center on Bedard’s line. Good read here.As the Blackhawks seek solutions, Anton Frondell's role is one place to start. He's struggled lately trying to carry his own line. Perhaps a move to Connor Bedard's wing — or hell, as Bedard's center! — could ignite him. It's worth a try. New column: t.co/Dq12GXGHCT
— Ben Pope (@BenPopeCST) October 30, 2026 Powers also added to the chatter that the Blackhawks are actively working the phones.Davidson seems aware the Blackhawks need help and has been working the phones. He has contacted nearly every team around the league inquiring about defensemen and forwards, according to a league source who spoke on the condition of anonymity so they could speak candidly about ongoing negotiations. Davidson has expressed a need for a scoring winger and a reliable defenseman. So far, not much has materialized in trade discussions. Most general managers want to see how their teams fare in the first few months before making larger roster decisions.
In Elliotte Friedman’s written “32 Thoughts” column on Friday, he reiterated that “Teuvo Teräväinen as an Ottawa short-term injection made sense, but that idea was denied to me.” One other fascinating note from Friedman’s column, focusing specifically on still-unsigned defenseman Simon Edvinsson, Friedman reports the interested teams are “Boston (although less chatter recently), Nashville, St. Louis, San Jose, Seattle.” He also wrote that “Carolina, which has a history of threatening offer sheets, did so with Edvinsson. My understanding is it was right around July 1, and may have contained an added twist: they were going to trade him to a third team.” That’s interesting… Hey, did you hear Nikita Kucherov asked for a trade out of Tampa last night? About that…Statement released by Tampa Bay Lightning GM Julien BriseBois:“We are aware of the media reports regarding the future of Nikita Kucherov with the Lightning. We unequivocally have no intention of trading Nikita.''
— Pierre LeBrun (@PierreVLeBrun) October 31, 2026 On Friday, the Court of Arbitration for Sport (CAS) ordered the International Ice Hockey Federation (IIHF) to let Russian teams play in its events. The decision means Russia must be allowed to compete in all events run by the IIHF in the 2026-27 season, including the World Junior Championship, which is being hosted in Edmonton and Red Deer from December 26 to January 5. The IIHF and other member countries have already expressed disappointment in the decision of the CAS, the sport’s highest court. This is big news on a number of levels, but especially for the 2027 NHL Draft. This year’s Russian draft class is considered one of the strongest in recent years, headlined by Nazar Privalov and Sergei Skvortsov. Belarus is also back in play, which means Blachawks defenseman Artyom Levshunov could be in play for the next Men’s World Championship and the Olympics.Full statement on the Court of Arbitration for Sport's decision today on Russian participation in IIHF Championships: t.co/dXa7pswROt pic.twitter.com/NIdLQ2I1et
