Russell makes case for Vesti to land Cadillac F1 seat

George Russell has thrown an intriguing name into the increasingly crowded conversation surrounding Cadillac's 2027 driver line-up, backing Mercedes reserve Frederik Vesti as a deserving candidate for a full-time Formula 1 opportunity with the American outfit.

The Dane may not have been the most obvious name on the shortlist, but his impressive showing in Friday's opening practice at the Mexico City Grand Prix has given his ambitions a timely boost.

And with Cadillac still searching for a partner to Sergio Perez next season, Russell believes his Mercedes colleague has done enough to warrant serious consideration.

Vesti stepped into Russell's W17 for FP1 at the Autodromo Hermanos Rodriguez, making the most of an opportunity that has often been missing from his previous practice outings.

The 24-year-old clocked in third, finishing just 0.074s behind Mercedes team-mate Kimi Antonelli and 0.733s adrift of session leader Charles Leclerc.

It was a particularly encouraging performance given that much of Vesti's previous Friday running had been devoted to long-run programmes rather than outright performance.

Russell throws his weight behind Vesti

Russell’s comments on Vesti’s session suggested that he would welcome seeing Vesti finally get his chance on the Formula 1 grid.

“He did a really good job,” said Russell. “I know he's really fighting hard to be in with a shot potentially of the Cadillac seat, and I think he deserves his chance.

“He's put a lot of effort in working with our team, we all respect him very highly; most FP1 sessions that he's done, he's had the brunt of the work and not really getting performance runs in.

“So I think it was important for us as a team, and I said to the team, 'I want to ensure that he gets an opportunity to show what he can do, that's the least that we could do', so yeah that was nice.”

Vesti's credentials extend beyond his Mercedes responsibilities. The former Formula 2 runner-up, who finished second in the 2023 championship, has also been involved in Cadillac's Hypercar programme, giving him an existing connection with the American manufacturer's wider racing operation.

That dual relationship could prove useful as Cadillac weighs up its options for 2027. While Valtteri Bottas remains the expected favourite to partner Perez, Vesti's name is increasingly relevant in a driver market that has yet to produce a definitive answer.

    Cadillac's alternatives face different hurdles

Vesti is not the only candidate hoping to secure the vacant seat. Colton Herta remains in contention despite a difficult Formula 2 campaign and the outstanding requirement to secure the necessary superlicence points.

The former IndyCar star replaced Bottas in Cadillac's car for FP1 in Mexico but endured a far less encouraging outing than Vesti, finishing last and 3.237s off Leclerc's benchmark. He was also 0.970s slower than Perez.

Herta nevertheless remains determined to make the leap to Formula 1, with another FP1 appearance in Brazil next week potentially helping him satisfy the superlicence requirements.

“I want to do the best I can for the team,” said Herta. “Every time I get in the car, I want to be in Formula 1 - that's the goal.

“That's why I'm over here doing this. Personally, I want to get there as soon as possible. A lot of discussions are happening and a lot of stuff is going on outside of what I can control.

“I'm just trying to do my best inside the car and hope that shows for something.”

Esteban Ocon is another available option following his impending departure from Haas, although he is understood to be heading towards a reserve role with Aston Martin.

For Vesti, meanwhile, the challenge is turning occasional Friday appearances and his Mercedes reserve responsibilities into something more permanent.

Russell has made his endorsement clear, and Friday's performance provided a timely reminder of what the Dane can deliver when given a proper opportunity.

Cadillac has yet to reveal its full intentions beyond Perez, but it may now have another name worth taking seriously as it prepares to complete its first driver line-up for the 2027 campaign.
