I was waiting for Bears Defensive Coordinator Dennis Allen’s reaction to the Jeffery Simmons trade, and he did not disappoint.
If a picture is worth a thousand words, this 20-second clip might be worth a billion:
Christmas came early for DA ? t.co/PPAaONJnZv
— Chicago Bears (@ChicagoBears) October 30, 2026What a moment between the Bears’ defensive coordinator and a reporter on the beat at Halas Hall:
Reporter: You said the trade was like looking at the presents under the tree on Christmas morning. What’s the best Christmas gift you got?
Allen: Oh, golly.
Reporter: He took my question.
Allen: I dunno, but I’ll take this one. I’ll take Jeffery Simmons, alright? We’ll say that’s the best one.
I audibly laughed at this back-and-forth for the best reasons possible. That was a fun give-and-take between a coach and reporter. And after the spicy exchange between Bears quarterback Caleb Williams and the media from two weeks ago, I think we all needed a light-hearted clip to keep the vibes at Halas Hall in a good place.

On the one hand, I’m sure Bears Defensive Coordinator Dennis Allen has some fond Christmas memories. But on the other hand, given what we’ve heard from Allen as we’ve followed his every press conference since his arrival on Bears Head Coach Ben Johnson’s staff, you just know he is so locked into this season right now that the trade would supersede any Christmas gift he’s gotten in the past.
I love how easy it is to see how fired up he is about working with Jeffery Simmons. He might not show it right now with an elevated tone of voice or a fist pump. However, you can tell from the body language and the playfulness in his tone that he is over the moon now that the trade is officially official.
Now that Jeffery Simmons is officially in the fold, it will be interesting to see how he is deployed. Bear Report’s Zack Pearson (via Twitter/X) relays that the Bears’ defensive coordinator will see how much of the system Simmons can learn and digest between now and when the team kicks off on Monday Night Football against the Seattle Seahawks. Bears GM Ryan Poles told reporters at Halas Hall on Friday that he expects Simmons to play, which led to colleague Patrick K. Flowers digging into what the snap share could look like for the new star defensive tackle in his debut. You should read Patrick’s piece if you haven’t already done so.
The more I dig into the Simmons trade, the more I realize how much of a force multiplier he can be for this defense. You can see on the tape how Simmons impacts games at the line of scrimmage. He penetrates the offensive line and gets into the backfield quickly to disrupt quarterbacks and running backs. But that’s not where it ends for Simmons, who has a presence that should open up opportunities for players around him.

Austin Booker — We’ve seen how much better he performs when paired with Montez Sweat. It has me intrigued to see what he can do when opposing offenses have to account for Sweat and Simmons. At a minimum, Simmons having a straight-line path to the quarterback should mean more opportunities for the edge rushers. Montez Sweat — We saw how much better Sweat performed last year once Booker returned from injury. Now, he gets to play next to his old college teammate. Not only is that fun, but it has the potential to make for a disruptive duo. I do not envy opposing offensive coaches who need to game plan for these guys.JEFFERY SIMMONS HIGHLIGHTS — SACKS, STOPS, AND TOUCHDOWN CATCHES
Grady Jarrett — With all due respect to Gervon Dexter Sr., Simmons is the best defensive tackle partner that Jarrett has played with since joining the Bears. Even though the sack and tackle-for-loss numbers don’t show it, Jarrett has performed admirably as a pass rusher and run-stopper. It is easy to dream about what kind of juice he’ll have playing next to Simmons. Devin Bush — During the conversation with a friend that was referenced above, I rattled off Bush, T.J. Edwards, and D’Marco Jackson in succession. But let’s not get it twisted. Bush is the big one. A big-ticket free-agent addition from this offseason, Bush could be the biggest beneficiary from an improved defensive line eating blocks in a way that would help open up opportunities for him to get clearer paths to ball carriers. These are the types of things we can start thinking about when we discuss what it means to have a difference-making defensive lineman in the trenches. Everyone is better for it. Jeffery Simmons’ fellow defensive linemen will benefit. So will the linebackers. If the front seven is better, then it means the jobs for the cornerbacks and safeties behind them will be easier. Chicago has been dealing with cornerback and safety injuries since training camp. Perhaps Simmons’ mere presence could raise productivity in the defensive backfield — even by a little bit.
