Jeffery Simmons Declares His Championship Aspirations Upon Arriving in Chicago

Jeffery Simmons has been a Bear for about 30 hours, and he already knows exactly why he’s here.

Simmons met with reporters at Halas Hall for the first time on Friday, and the new Bears defensive tackle didn’t waste any time getting to the point. When asked what the trade told him, he went straight to the price Chicago paid.

“The trade told me everything I needed to know, especially the value, giving away two first-round picks. I can look at that like, ‘man, I just got traded,’ but I can also look at the bright side of things; this team believes in what they have here, and they want it right now. My game, my passion, my energy, my leadership, I can only help this team even more.

“A great locker room all the way from the quarterback down, so my job is to not come in here and be nothing more than myself. I’m excited to be able to help this team compete for a championship. That’s every team in the NFL’s goal and I think right now with the way this team has been competing, watching these guys from afar, it’s a great team, a great locker room, and I’m excited to do my part to help this team get to its goal.”

New Bears DT Jeffery Simmons: ‘The Trade Told Me Everything I Needed to Know’

That lines up with what Bears General Manager Ryan Poles said earlier today.

“We’re all in,” Poles said. “From the moment we started training camp this year, we were all in.”

So the GM and the newest star on the roster are on the same page. That matters more than it might seem.

Here’s what stood out to me. Simmons could have spent that answer talking about how hard it was to leave Nashville, and nobody would have blamed him. He was a Titan for eight years, a captain for six, and he was clearly heartbroken about leaving. Instead, he took the trade as a compliment. Two first-round picks are a statement about what a team thinks of you, and Simmons heard it loud and clear.

I also like that he didn’t come in promising to change the culture or take over the locker room. He called it a great locker room from the quarterback down and said his job is just to be himself. That’s the right way to walk into a 5-2 team that’s already winning. The Bears don’t need Simmons to fix them. They need him to be the best interior pass rusher in football on a defense that’s been missing one, and to bring the same edge he brought every week in Tennessee.

If Monday night in Seattle goes the way Poles is hoping, Simmons will get his first chance to show it.
