Caleb Williams’ cleats are starting to get expensive to wear.
Pro Football Talk’s Mike Florio reports the NFL is fining the Chicago Bears quarterback $23,882 for having an “unauthorized logo” on his cleats in the team’s Week 7 win against the New England Patriots. That is nearly double the $11,941 fine that he paid for wearing them in the team’s Week 6 win against the Atlanta Falcons. In case you missed it, Williams wears Caddix cleats, which are “unapproved” in the NFL’s eyes because the company isn’t one of the league’s brand partners — such as Nike, Adidas, or Under Armour. Players who wear unauthorized garb have to have the logos covered. It’s such an odd thing.
Front Office Sports’ Mark Maske (via Twitter/X) notes that Williams can still wear the cleats and avoid more fines in the future by putting tape over the logo. This whole subplot is on a level of silliness that I previously could not have fathomed existed before this week.

They’ve been super comfy and they’ve worked. What’s the backstory here? “They are a science-type of cleat. It’s something that focuses on when you plant on the hard plants on turf or grass, they call them SmartStuds, and they move when you move in these hard plants. They take tension off of your tendons, your joints and all of that. So over the course of a long career or over the course of a long year, when you can take some percentage — it could be one, it could be 50, it could be 12, it could be whatever, you know. When you take that percentage off consistently over a period of time, you know, you get to have the chance, a higher chance of being healthy. And so that’s what I focus on.” More from Williams: “I try to be healthy. They’re smart cleats. They’re science cleats, and they’ve been working for me. So … what’s next for Caleb Williams and his now-infamous cleats? ESPN’s Courtney Cronin reports in this story that WIlliams will continue wearing the cleats. Cronin adds that the NFL and Caddix have a hearing planned for Nov. 10. The company has said it plans on paying Williams’ fine. Former NFL quarterback Joe Flacco, who is listed as one of the company’s advisor, has also siad he’d pay the fine on Williams’ behalf.
“If Caleb gets fined again for wearing Caddix, I’ll pay the fine myself,” Flacco said in a statement to ESPN. “I’ve worn these cleats for years, and I know firsthand the difference they make. When you’re playing at this level, you need equipment you can trust. This isn’t about making a statement or breaking the rules just to break them. It’s about wearing gear that works for you and helps keep you safe on the field. If Caleb believes in Caddix the way I do, I’m happy to stand behind him.”
I never thought I’d stand with Joe Flacco on anything. But here we are! I guess there really is a first time for everything.
