Three years before Sir Patrick Stewart’s death, the late actor told the Irish Independent that he had a “practically non-existent” relationship with his children.
Stewart revealed that he was separated from his children, Daniel Stewart (born in 1967) and Sophie Alexandra Stewart (born in 1972), whom he shared with his ex-wife, Sheila Falconer. When asked if he found it difficult to be the father he wanted to be when his children were young, he said, “It was.”
“Given that I’m separated from my children now — we don’t have relationships — they have become very important,” Stewart said. “I never thought that this would happen, but both my children are in their 50s — they’re not children anymore, they’re adults. And my relationship with them is practically non-existent.”

Stewart said that “not a day goes by” that he wasn’t “pained by the memory of my children, who they were, and by a sense of responsibility that they became who they are, in part, because of me and my influence or lack of influence on them.”
Although Stewart’s daughter Sophie has stayed out of the spotlight over the years, his son Daniel followed in his father’s footsteps. From Law and Order: Special Victims Unit in 2001 to Silent Witness in 2020, Daniel has led a successful acting career. However, in an interview with The Independent in December 2009, Stewart said he was “horrified” when Daniel told him that he wanted to act.
“I could’ve done better as a parent when my kids were little,” Stewart said. “I was just obsessed with my work and everything else took second place.”
Stewart died at the age of 86 on Wednesday, Oct. 28, at his Los Angeles home. The next day, it was revealed that the Star Trek actor passed after a “brief and poignant journey with Alzheimer’s Disease and Lewy Body Dementia.”
Stewart leaves behind his two children and his wife, Sunny Ozell.
