Sir Patrick Stewart will make his final on-screen appearance in Avengers: Doomsday after his death, Marvel Studios reported.
Today, a spokesperson announced that Stewart died on Oct. 28 at age 86 following a brief battle with Alzheimer’s and Lewy body dementia. His death comes less than two months before the premiere of Avengers: Doomsday.
The film will introduce the X-Men to the Marvel Cinematic Universe, with Stewart portraying the team’s iconic leader, Charles Xavier, a.k.a. Professor X. In one of the film’s trailers, Xavier reunites with his friend, Erik Lehnsherr/Magneto, who says:
“Death comes for us all. That’s all I know for sure. The question isn’t, ‘Are you prepared to die?’ The question is, ‘Who will you be when you close your eyes?'”
Avengers: Doomsday now carries greater emotional weight following Stewart’s death. The legendary actor first portrayed Professor X in 2000’s X-Men alongside Hugh Jackman and Sir Ian McKellen. Since then, he appeared as Professor X in multiple sequels and spin-offs. He even made a cameo in 2022’s Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness.

In his last interview before his death, Stewart told TV Insider that he had no intention of retiring from acting. ” I can’t imagine ever officially ‘retiring,'” Stewart said. “I’ll always and forever be an actor.
In the wake of Stewart’s death, Marvel Studios released a statement on X saying they are “deeply saddened” by his passing.
“Sir Patrick brought Professor Charles Xavier to life with extraordinary grace, intelligence, and humanity, defining the character for generations of fans, from ‘X-Men’ to ‘Logan’ to ‘Avengers: Doomsday,'” Marvel Studios continued. “He was a singular talent, a generous collaborator, and a true gentleman. Our hearts go out to his wife Sunny, his children, his friends, and the countless fans around the world whose lives he touched with his art.”
Avengers: Doomsday premieres in theaters on Dec. 18, 2026.
