Could the Chicago Bears consider another teams stadium? New option on the table

Could the Bears’ new stadium saga see them playing in the same spot as another Chicago team?

A new proposal could see that become a reality.

As of right now, the Bears say they’re still focused on building a stadium in northwest Indiana, but Illinois remains in the game, as lawmakers in Springfield are expected to potentially take up a bill to encourage the team to stay in the Land of Lincoln.

According to a report from Crain’s Chicago Business Thursday, a measure that passed the Illinois Senate earlier this year is gaining steam, with revisions being considered that could help move it along.

While the assumption has been that the Bears would build a stadium in Arlington Heights on land they purchased for the purpose, there have been pitches made to encourage the team to build a stadium in Chicago instead, including a recent one from the architectural firm behind the Willis Tower, Skidmore, Owings & Merrill.

Their stadium vision would unfold in the Bridgeport neighborhood, where the Chicago White Sox are weighing the possibility of leaving their long-time home in favor of a site in the South Loop.

A series of renderings released Wednesday by Adam Semel, the managing partner at the firm, showcased the firm’s thoughts on yet another potential stadium location. The massive project would include a domed stadium, parking spots, transit access and enough space for a stadium district complete with bars and hotels.

“This is an incredible site for [transit],” Semel said. “You have the CTA, you have Metra, you have the Dan Ryan, we already have parking there. And the idea is while the White Sox are building a new stadium, we could build the Bears simultaneously south of it.”

The plan would also require moving some Chicago Housing Authority housing, but Semel says the proposal would be a generational investment for the South Side.

“In our drawings there’s about 1,500 units of residential, market rate and affordable on the east side,” he said.

The design comes after a series of proposals that have been put forward for the White Sox to build a new stadium in the South Loop neighborhood. While one proposal puts the stadium site in a development known as “The 78,” another puts the stadium on a site currently being used by Amtrak for maintenance projects, with that proposal favored by White Sox minority owner Justin Ishbia.

That proposal would potentially shift the Amtrak maintenance yard to Bridgeport, an idea that has been met with resistance from community groups.

The Bears have not yet commented on the proposal, nor has Illinois Gov. JB Pritzker.
