Scholar Athlete: Brendan and Evan Mangone

HENRIETTA, N.Y. — For Brendan and Evan Mangone, football has always been a family affair, the brothers, who double as our Scholar Athletes of the week, have shared the field on Rush-Henrietta’s varsity for the past two seasons.

“I’m going to remember the fun that we had. And it’s just a memory, just nights like these you can’t take back,” Brendan Mangone said.

Brendan is a senior and the starting quarterback, while Evan, a sophomore, is his backup. They also play together on defense, and Evan is now the starting kicker.

“I used to kick at least, but he took that over. Unfortunately, I’m a little mad about that, but it’s all right,” Brendan said.

Rush-Henrietta head coach Bruce Johnson said the brothers play the same positions on offense and defense. “It’s almost like having twins out here. These guys really know each other. They play the exact same positions offensively and defense,” Johnson said.

“I was always inspired by him,” Evan said.

“It’s always a competition. At home, we are always competing on and off the field. It’s great. It’s great,” Brendan said.

“They’re brothers, they’ve been competing since day one,” Johnson said.

When Brendan was hurt midway through last season, Evan stepped up to take his spot. “It’s a different feeling when you see your little brother going in full spot like that,” Brendan said.

Their father, Jason Mangone, is the head coach of the SUNY Brockport football team. “Kind of having my dad is an inspiration. I mean, I wore his number for however long,” Brendan said.

Jason Mangone said he always thinks about the game situation when watching his sons play. “It’s always just thinking about what the situation is, times score. And then when a mistake happens mentally with one of my sons, I’m always internally thinking, okay, later we got to talk about that one,” Jason said.

Evan said he can always hear his dad cheering from the stands. “He’s always screaming. He’s always yelling, I can hear. He’s giving me tips from the sideline. It’s great,” Evan said.

The Mangone brothers hope to win a Section V championship this season. “Goal for the end of season is to, get the brick. You know, I think that’s our first goal of many. Now you want to go to the state final. We want to play until December when you can’t really feel your fingers anymore,” Brendan said.

“Bricks, brick, obviously. And then beyond,” Evan said.

The Royal Comets are on a bye this week and will play the winner of McQuaid vs. UPrep in the Class AA semifinals next week.
