This Just In: The Home Stretch

This Just In — We’re nearly there.

If (and only IF) you have already voted and done everything your body and your wallet allows to help the candidates of your choice, please dress up for Trick or Treating on Saturday and enjoy the extra hour of sleep on Sunday. We need to rest up and prepare for a night of (we hope) celebration on Tuesday.

    WE HOPE.

Many of us have a healthy skepticism about looking forward to Election Day, anticipating that everyone you think of as “the good guys” will prevail at the polls. Nearly all of us are tired of all the ads, emails and texts and various other forms of begging for $2 to save democracy.

Coming into the home stretch, it’s been delightful to see former President Obama on the campaign trail. The Cheesecake Factory should be grateful for the free advertising, but what I’m encouraged by is getting another look at the happy warrior and genuine leader, making the case for real excitement for a mid-term election.

Excitement is what we have. Engagement is what we have. Endurance is what we need.

The course correction that begins on Tuesday is the first mile of a marathon. We need accountability for this administration, to be sure. Going forward at the same time, we need a vision for a better future and the values to deliver it the right way — restoration of the rule of law and a budget that represents the values of a society, not a mechanism for wealthy people to get wealthier.

The first things I’ll be looking for is how the elections are certified and how the message of their legitimacy is brought to the public. Secretaries of State all across the country will be the star of this show. Election legitimacy is not bestowed by the White House.

I look forward to Secretaries of State and Governors of both parties declaring that their states have gotten the job done, without concern for in-person voter fraud.

I am eager to see the volunteer “polling place observers” rolled out by democrats outnumbering the administration’s promised “observers”, just as the voter turnout has been thus far.

More than anything, I am hopeful that we can be relieved of the sense that our treasury is being raided by a conman, unchecked by the branches of government that are intended to rein in abuses of power. Our founder understood the human possibilities of abuse of power. They did an awfully good job of conceiving a method of keeping it in check, but it requires elected officials to make good on their oath of office.

Not for nothing, I feel genuine excitement that the North Carolina General Assembly might just be flipped into balance despite the gerrymandering efforts over the last 20 years. If so, the North Carolina state government can start to undo some of the egregious damage that’s been done.

I have voted. I have donated as my wallet would allow. I’m going to go get my pumpkins and get ready for carving with the grandkids this weekend, followed by trick or treating. I hope I get some Milk Duds. Good luck, everyone.
