Archive of Our Own, also known as AO3, is one of the biggest websites for fanfiction writers and readers. It’s a place people go to check out stories covering a variety of shows, movies, books, and even video games.
Like FanFiction.net, the site makes it possible for people to upload their work for free. Readers also use it for free to read the content, whether they want to see how Outlander could be set in a modern world or what could have been in Supernatural had Destiel actually happened on the screen.
Is AO3 Down?
However, on Thursday, Oct. 29, users were shocked to find out that the site was down. This is meant to be a 12-hour maintenance shutdown, but as work started, it was clear more work was needed.
The OTW status page posted updates throughout the day, initially sharing that the site was down for maintenance and that maintenance was in progress. As soon as the 12-hour window was mentioned, there was a note that it could take longer.
Now the website is still down, and it’s going to be weeks before users can get back to their favorite fanfiction pieces.
When Will AO3 Be Back Up?
As of writing this, AO3 is estimating that maintenance will take two to four weeks. There is some hope that it could be brought back sooner, but in a degraded state.
If that happens, the site may be offline now and then as other maintenance occurs. Work is happening behind the scenes to fully restore the service.
We estimate that service restoration for #AO3 will take around 2 weeks but it could be up to 4 weeks. We are hopeful that we will be able to bring the site back up in a degraded state sooner. Refer to our status page for updates: t.co/YAyyoTDOpE t.co/PUWaHF9M8L
— AO3 Status (@AO3_Status) October 29, 2026A Month of Issues on Archive of Our Own
The issues on the site actually started earlier this month. On Oct. 14, AO3 took to X to share that the team was aware of issues with uploading and/or viewing icons. Those issues were resolved within the day, but then another issue arose on Oct. 23.
Just two days earlier, a rollout was happening to translate email notifications, so that users around the world would automatically get emails in their native language, with Simplified Chinese as the first. Then issues surrounding email notifications, searching, bookmarks, and other elements of the site came up.
While those issues were fixed within the day, it took just three days for the planned maintenance to cause a problem. This is potentially the maintenance that was originally set to happen in August but was delayed to a “later date.”
AO3 encourages users to follow the OTW status page, and many updates are posted on their X account.
