Amazon’s long-awaited drone delivery service has whirred to life in a handful of Chicago suburbs, but some residents want the technology to be grounded.
The drones have been put into use at Amazon’s fulfillment center in suburban Markham, fulfilling a promise from the tech company to roll out the delivery service earlier this year.
While the company has argued that drone delivery will provide better service to customers, some residents are already criticizing the service, complaining about noise and raising safety concerns.
“It’s got a weird sound to it,” Homewood resident Paul Bochenk said. “It’s not as loud as I thought, but it’s kind of annoying.”
According to Amazon, the company has deployed approximately 21 drones. The drones are capable of delivering a package of up to five pounds and to deliver it as far as eight miles from the facility. The cost savings for the company is significant, as Amazon says it will cost less than $5 per delivery.
“Prime Air’s ultra-fast drone delivery is safe, reliable, and the customer response has been overwhelmingly positive,” a company spokesperson said.
Homewood resident Marty Tully believes he has received a drone delivery already, and says despite some hesitation he thinks the service could be a good idea.
“I enjoy it because they can drop off medications. It’s quick delivery, less drivers. That’s the main thing: less traffic,” he said.
While the company has not yet officially launched the rollout, residents in the south suburbs could soon see deliveries made by drones in the weeks ahead, as the company has plans to deploy them at additional centers.
