Sylvester Stallone Recalls How His Agents Warned Him Not To Star in ‘Rhinestone’ With Dolly Parton

Sylvester Stallone remembers being determined to star opposite Dolly Parton in the 1984 musical rom-com Rhinestone, even though his team told him he would regret it.

The first three Rocky films had made Stallone an action superstar, and he told Entertainment Tonight his agents “went nuts” when he insisted on portraying a singer in Rhinestone.

“They said, ‘Jesus, what a career killer.’ I go, ‘So be it,’ ”he recalled.

Stallone wrote the screenplay about singer Jake Farris, portrayed by Parton, who made a bet with a club manager that she could turn anyone into a country star. The manager picked a cab driver who hated country music, Nick Martinelli, played by Stallone. Despite the star power, Rhinestone was a critical and financial flop, earning only $21 million worldwide on an estimated $28 million budget.

Parton was already one of music’s biggest stars, and this was her third film, following 9 to 5 in 1980 and The Best Little Whorehouse in Texas in 1982. Stallone couldn’t resist the chance to work with “a real icon.”

He has fond memories of their time together, recalling how the “Jolene” hitmaker constantly laughed and brought joy to the set every day.

“She would also go around and knew the name of every crew member,” he said about Parton, who died on August 25 at age 80.

The two icons received their stars on the Hollywood Walk of Fame together in June 1984, just before Rhinestone was released. Stallone praised Parton when she passed away.

“It’s hard to imagine a world without Dolly Parton. An American icon and a brilliant woman, beloved by so many. I have many fond memories of our time on the set of Rhinestone,” he wrote on Instagram.

The Tulsa King star also posted a video, commenting on Parton’s special qualities.

“Everyone loved her, and I don’t think people realize what a brilliant mind she had. She was just incredible. I used to call her ‘the Pioneer Woman’ that could do everything to survive. And she did,” said Stallone.
