Merrimack to Add Men’s Swimming and Diving Beginning 2027-28 Academic Year

Merrimack College has announced it will add men’s swimming and diving to its athletic program beginning in the 2027-2028 academic year.

The school announced on Wednesday that it will be expanding its list of Division I programs through a comprehensive plan called Warriors Rising: A Blueprint for Athletics Growth and Competitive Excellence.

In addition to men’s swimming and diving, Merrimack will also be introducing women’s flag football, acrobatics and tumbling, and men’s rowing to its athletic offerings.

“Athletics is an important part of who we are at Merrimack. It brings our community together, creates a powerful sense of pride and belonging, and provides our student-athletes with an experience that challenges them to pursue excellence in competition, in the classroom and in their lives.” Merrimack President Christopher E. Hopey said in a school press release. “As Merrimack continues to grow, we want our athletics program to grow with it, creating opportunities for more students to be part of the Warrior community and building on the momentum we have established as a Division I institution.”

Merrimack also recently elevated cheer from a club program to a varsity sport. Merrimack currently sponsors 28 varsity sports.

Merrimack introduced women’s swimming and diving in 2011, with its first official season in 2012-13; the program currently competes in the Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference (MAAC).

The new athletic additions also included a new hire for the swimming and diving program, as Erik Ripley was announced as the new Director of the Swimming and Diving teams earlier this month.

“We know the student-athlete experience at Merrimack College transforms lives in powerful and meaningful ways. It helps students become the best versions of themselves and develops leaders who make a difference in their communities,” Joe Foley, Merrimack Athletic Director, said in the press release from the school. “Warriors Rising is about extending that transformative experience to even more students while strengthening our commitment to providing every Merrimack student-athlete with an exceptional experience at the highest level.”

This announcement also comes the same week as two other new college swimming and diving programs; Hofstra recently announced that it, too, will introduce women’s and men’s swimming and diving for the 2027-28 academic year.
