Harry Kane might not be the most glamourous winner of the Ballon d’Or, but victory would prove reliability and consistency go a long way in top-level football.
Scoring 73 goals in a single season wouldn’t be a bad effort for a team, but for one individual to score that many on their own is an astounding feat.
That was what Lamine Yamal would be Kane’s biggest threat to winning the 2026 Ballon d’Or.
Yamal’s stats across 2025-26 gave him a strong case to take the crown. He registered 24 goals and 17 assists at club level with Barcelona, with his 41 goal involvements behind only Kane (68), Olise (48), Mbappé (48), Haaland (47) and Díaz (45) among players in the top five European leagues.
The scary thing about Yamal compared to his peers is that he finished 2025-26 with a World Cup trophy at the age of just 19 years and six days old. He is the youngest player to ever win the competition.
It’ll be harsh on Yamal to finish as runner-up for a second season in a row, especially after playing a part in Barcelona’s La Liga title win and Spain’s successful World Cup campaign.
In World Cup years since the start of the 1990s, there have only been two instances of a player not winning the Champions League/European Cup or World Cup but taking home the Ballon d’Or: Hristo Stoichkov in 1994 and Lionel Messi in 2010. But Yamal’s time will come.
For now, Kane can bask in the glory of achieving what he set out to do by stepping outside his comfort zone and pushing himself to secure the trophies that were needed to cement his place in the pantheon of footballing greats.
