Jack Antonoff is speaking out about his split from actor and ex-partner Margaret Qualley to reveal that performing his songs about her on stage has been surprisingly “really beautiful.”
The frontman spoke with The Guardian three months after it was reported that the couple had separated and gone their own ways after three years of marriage. Antonoff had written a handful of hit songs about the 32-year-old actor and admitted that he wouldn’t have done it any other way.
“Songs which I wrote recently, I obviously was really worried about this specific thing,” he explained.
“I sat long and hard with it and thought, ‘If I change the setlist …’ and in my gut there was a unanimous jury that said, ‘No, this is the deal. The deal I’ve made with my audience is that I’m going to tell you honestly how I feel and I’m going to risk at any moment having to stand behind it for f—ing ever.’”
While the love songs have taken on a new meaning for the singer-songwriter, he says it’s been a “beautiful” feeling regardless of what the public knows about their split. He adds that anyone can relate to the “terrible sadness and pain” that comes with their new meaning, but there’s also a “great power” to it.
“I mean, for people to come together, to know what I write a song about, to know how that must feel for me now, to know what that song means to you as an audience member, to just hold it all and sort of celebrate,” he explained.

Above all, Antonoff says he sees no reason to rewrite the past and “would rather live through something publicly than even escape it privately.” He adds that he’s made it a point in his life to take on every aspect of his life head-on. Whether it’s writing about the good times or the bad, he admits that in the bad times he “can’t look myself in the mirror and pretend that those times didn’t exist.”
Antonoff goes on to say that he would rather live through it “publicly” than “escape it privately.” As of now, Qualley has not commented on the reason for their split, and neither has Antonoff.
