Chicago program uses the power of music to inspire students, adults

A Chicago-based nonprofit is using the power of music to help students develop a deeper understanding of themselves, society and the world around them.

Jeanne Warsaw, a 20-plus-year music industry executive, started MeMa Music 15 years ago.

“All music tells a story,” Warsaw said. “So, I thought, I’m going to create a curriculum that uses music from the past to help them be more engaged in school.”

When we caught up with Warsaw, she was at Chicago Collegiate Charter School.

“We give them this platform, so they can start talking about everything,” she explained. “And they can question the lyrics. It reaches every student no matter what the situation is, because it’s music and they want to talk about it.”

NBC Chicago’s Regina Waldroup asked some of the students what they thought about the music program.

“We learn history lessons from every song,” said one student, Jenyse. “I love history, and I love this class.”

“This class is about connecting with music and allowing yourself to just, you know, figure out what songs are about,” another student, Adejah, said. “I am never bored in this class. I am always engaged.”

“We can’t afford a full-time music teacher,” explained Tracie Sanlin, chief executive and academic officer. “We believe music is invaluable and important to everyone, and this is how we’re able to do it through this partnership.”

Warsaw has partnerships with schools and community organizations across Chicago.

“It reaches every student no matter what the situation is, because it’s music and they want to talk about it,” Warsaw said.

MeMa Music also offers programs for adults, including veterans, providing supportive spaces for reflection, resilience and personal growth through music.
