ROCHESTER, N.Y. (WHEC) — Steve Romano has spent 50 years coaching football on the sidelines and says he would not have it any other way.
“I love being out here. I couldn’t think of – what would I be doing at home right now? Waiting for a college football game to come on,” Romano said. “So instead I’m out here with these guys and just loving it.”
Romano started his coaching career at John Marshall High School in 1976 and has worked at several schools since then. He spent time at Aquinas, Greece Arcadia, Webster, Penfield, Pittsford, St. John Fisher, SUNY Brockport, and now, the University of Rochester.
Romano said being around young athletes keeps himself young, happy and motivated to continue coaching.
“It keeps you happy. You’re around smart kids that want to change the world out here. I can’t think of a better way to finish off my career but to keep on going,” Romano said.
He shared a story about a former player from Pittsford who credited Romano for his success.
“My kicker from Pittsford, he invited me…He said coach, I have a public speaking class and I want you to come in and listen to a speech that I’m going to do,” Romano said. “He was pulling my leg.”
“He shows me a clip of a guy who kicked at Pittsford and he kicks at Maryland (currently). He comes on on a video clip and he says coach, I would not be here at Maryland without you. What do you do, what do you say? When you don’t realize the impact you make with these kids,” Romano said.
Romano said he does not coach for recognition but for the joy of working with these up-and-coming athletes.
“If someone calls you coach, it’s almost like saying Doctor, or Mister whoever. It’s a special feeling to be out here for 50 years and working with different kids,” Romano said.
At age 70, Romano said he still has the passion to keep coaching.
“I’m 70 years old. I don’t know what that means, but all I know is I still have the passion for it. When the passion goes away, then I guess I’ll know when that happens. I don’t forsee that in the near future. I really don’t,” Romano said.
