Devoted Dolly Parton fans are swooning over Hannah Harper‘s just-released cover of the country queen’s biggest hit, 9 to 5.
The 2026 American Idol winner didn’t get to meet Parton before her death on August 25. But Harper, 26, spent time soaking up the vibes in Parton’s Dollywood dressing room before taking the stage to perform in early October, writing on Instagram, “What an honor to stand in the space of a woman who paved the way for so many of us dreamers.”
On Friday, October 23, 19 Recordings released Harper’s 9 to 5 (Live From Dollywood) as a new single. The music video features footage from her visit to the Pigeon Forge, Tennessee tourist destination that Parton opened in 1986, five years after 9 to 5 became her first number one hit on Billboard’s Hot 100, the chart that covers the hottest tunes across all genres.
Parton wrote and recorded 9 to 5 for the soundtrack of her first major movie, also called 9 to 5, a classic workplace comedy she co-starred in with Lily Tomlin and Jane Fonda. The tune spent 28 weeks on the Hot 100, including two separate weeks in the top spot. Incredibly, only one other single from Parton reached number one on the Hot 100: her 1983 duet with the late country crooner Kenny Rogers, Islands In The Stream.
Harper’s live rendition of 9 to 5 has quickly drawn comparisons to Parton’s distinct sound, as fans have flooded social media and the music video with accolades, calling her single “amazing,” “outstanding” and “stunning.”
One person responded to the music video by writing, “I really hope Dolly got to see her. Out of all the artists to perform Dolly’s songs she has it down.”
Another commented on Instagram, “Runnin’ to download! From the dress to the song Dolly would be so proud! ???”
“I have always had high standards when anyone sang 9to5 … almost more than any other Queen Dolly song,” someone else wrote. “You @hannahharper absolutely killed this! SO GOOD ? ? ?”
Even Dollywood’s social media team gushed, “This will be on repeat for us all day ? congratulations @hannahharper!”
View this post on InstagramHarper grew up performing with her family’s traveling bluegrass band, hailing from southern Missouri. Before winning American Idol in May, she was a stay-at-home mom to her three little boys, whom she shares with her husband of eight years, Devon Mendenhall.
As Harper skyrocketed to fame on the show, easily advancing every week with near-flawless performances, Mendenhall quit his job in law enforcement to care for their kids. They now travel as a family while she’s on the road, opening for major country acts including Brad Paisley and Lauren Alaina. She made her Grand Ole Opry debut in June with American Idol judge (and 2005 winner) Carrie Underwood by her side.
