‘The Sopranos’ Star, 59, Opens up About His ‘Humiliating’ Medical Condition: ‘I Had to Start All Over Again’

Max Casella is a well-known actor who has been in the industry for decades. He played Benny Fazio on The Sopranos, Leo D’Alessio on Boardwalk Empire, and Vinnie Delpino on Doogie Howser, MD. Even though he has had an illustrious career, he recently opened up to Page Six about a medical condition that he had in his twenties that he worried would derail his career. It involved a growth hormone deficiency.

“It was insane. Wouldn’t have been my choice, but you know, given the cards you’re dealt. You make the best of it,” he said, explaining that he was already an established actor when he “went through the awkward phase that most people go through in high school.”

He continued, “I had to start all over again. It was a humiliating experience. You know what happens to especially boys when they go through puberty. They get awkward and zits and fat, chubby, whatever.”

Casella, who is currently 59, is now starring in Jimmy, which is a biographical film about Jimmy Stewart acting as a pilot during World War II and eventually returning to Hollywood to film It’s a Wonderful Life. Casella plays the director of the famous 1946 film, Frank Capra.

When speaking with Page Six, Casella also explained how he prepared for the iconic role. “I read his book,” he explained. “I watched some documentaries about him. What I was really trying to find out is how to play him. What kind of a person is he? How does he smoke a cigarette? How does he sit in a chair? Just get a vibe from, you know. There’s not a lot of footage of him at the time when he was younger, so it was challenging.”
