The Oregon father who stopped a school shooting last week has been too emotional to talk about what happened publicly. On Friday, he shared his story for the first time in a published interview.
Kaylub Giamanco said his instincts kicked in when he saw the shooter go into the school with a gun.
Three children — ages 5, 8 and 11 — and a teacher were killed at Silver Rail Elementary School in Bend, Oregon, last week when a former student there, 16-year-old Griffin J. John II, blasted his way through locked doors with a shotgun and attacked a special needs classroom. Another student was critically injured and a teacher was injured and hospitalized.
Giamanco said he dropped off his daughters at the school that morning before driving to work. A few hours later, the 36-year-old carpenter was passing the school again as he was heading home for lunch.
He said he spotted someone wearing black and carrying a long gun fire shots into a pickup truck and at a person mowing the school’s lawn.
The father said the gunman had thrown his rifle up and over the fence, and suddenly, panic flooded into his brain.
“And I was just… I just said no, no, no, no, no…I started hearing children pleading for their lives, and then I started hearing gunfire and I just started army crawling faster and faster and I told myself this is probably the last thing that I’m ever going to do,” Giamanco recounted.
Then, he crawled through a bottom window that had been shot out.

“And the special needs classroom was to my left. At that point, I was on the ground on my hands and knees. I reracked my weapon to make sure to make sure that a live round came out so that I knew that I was ready to go,” he said. “And then I peeked through the window.”
Then, Giamanco said he found his opportunity.
“And I seen a teacher on my left struggling with the gunman on the right with the rifle. And I knew that they were both sideways to me, and I knew that he did not know that I was there. So at that point, I swung the door out and open and I stepped in and I fired.”
Afterward, he called his mom and told her what happened.
…I was like, Mom I just had to take the life of what I think might be a child because he went into my daughters’ school with a gun. And uh, you know, she was just like, ‘Hey baby calm down. You did the right thing. You’re a hero. You saved lives.'”
Giamanco said the real hero is the brave, unarmed teacher who confronted the shooter.
He said he hopes to meet her one day.
Giamanco said he was the children’s “last line of defense” and that he regrets not arriving soon enough to save them all.
