Another Member of the Cubs’ Staff is Reportedly Up for the Mariners’ Managerial Gig

The Seattle Mariners’ managerial search reportedly includes a surprising candidate from the Chicago Cubs’ organization, and it’s not someone on the big league staff.

It’s farm director Jason Kanzler:

Two members of the Astros’ 2022 coaching staff have emerged as serious candidates in the Mariners managerial search: Joe Espada and Jason Kanzler, who is currently the Cubs farm director. With @Ken_Rosenthal and @PJ_Mooney – t.co/GyIKMk3VVV

“Kanzler, 36, has spent the past three seasons overseeing Chicago’s farm system, building on his previous work with the Astros as a major-league hitting coach and minor-league hitting coordinator, roles that required strong communication skills and incorporated aspects of individual instruction, data analysis, and research and development.

Kanzler, a 20th-round pick in the 2013 MLB Draft, played college baseball at Buffalo, where he earned a degree in psychology, and then lasted three seasons as a minor-league infielder in the Minnesota Twins’ organization before transitioning into the next phase of his career.

Kanzler worked closely with Astros shortstop Jeremy Peña, who blossomed into the 2022 World Series MVP at the end of his rookie year. Kanzler also developed a good relationship with Alex Bregman in Houston, to a degree that he helped lead the Cubs’ presentation to the free agent before the All-Star third baseman signed a five-year, $175 million contract last winter.”

The superficial way to describe this one is that there’s divisional familiarity, the Mariners’ big issue has been the offense, and Kanzler has helped lead a very strong procession of offensive graduates from the Cubs’ farm. He does have a relatively broad base of experience, though not having coached recently on a big league staff could be viewed as a hurdle to an immediate managerial transition in a new organization.

I don’t doubt the interest here is sincere, and we’ll have to see how this plays out. But it’s also the case that, with a rising talent like Kanzler, it only helps for him to have his name out there when attached to jobs like this. Maybe it means some extra money or responsibilities from the Cubs. Maybe it means more coaching or managerial opportunities in the future. Maybe it means the Cubs do whatever they can to keep him in the years ahead.

It’s also-also the case that, if the Mariners had keyed in on Joe Espada as their preferred target and wanted a little leverage in the negotiations, they would be served getting in some additional impressive names for conversations (and letting that out into the world). Maybe I’m just being hopeful that the Cubs won’t get poached.

In any case, I wouldn’t be thrilled to see the Cubs lose Kanzler at this moment in time, but you have support a guy’s chance to move up if it comes along.
