Junior Nationals qualifier Banks Anderson has announced his verbal commitment to swim and study at Missouri State University beginning in the fall of 2027. He publicized the news on SwimCloud, writing:
I am excited to announce my verbal commitment to continue my academic and swimming career at Missouri State University! Thanks to coach Dave and Chelsea for giving me the opportunity. Huge thanks to Coach Patrick and Katie, my teammates at Ad Astra, and my family for pushing to reach my goals throughout my swimming career. Go Bears!
A high school senior in Lawrence, Kansas, Anderson trains and competes year-round with Ad Astra Area Aquatics, where he primarily specializes in distance freestyle and the 400 IM.
The 2025-26 short course season was a breakthrough for Anderson, who dropped more than 13 seconds in the 1650 free, over 11 seconds in the 400 IM, about seven and a half seconds in the 500 free and over four seconds in the 200 free. He set all of his current lifetime bests at Speedo Sectionals – Columbia in March, where he finished fourth in the 400 IM (3:57.14) and 1650 free (15:35.26), sixth in the 500 free (4:29.74), 11th in the 200 fly (1:52.47) and 18th in the 200 free (1:41.23).
Anderson has also qualified to compete at both Winter Junior (SCY) and Summer Junior (LCM) Nationals. At Winter Juniors in December, he placed 39th in the 1650 free (15:45.01), 47th in the 1000 free (9:27.38), 87th in the 400 IM (4:09.77) and 99th in the 500 free (4:37.85), with only the 1650 free a lifetime best at the time. More recently, he set lifetime bests in all four of his long course events at Summer Juniors in July, finishing 16th in the 1500 free (15:55.98), 21st in the 800 free (8:21.02), 25th in the 400 free (3:58.55) and 37th in the 400 IM (4:32.57).
Top SCY Times:
200 Freestyle: 1:41.23 500 Freestyle: 4:29.74 1650 Freestyle: 15:35.26 200 Butterfly: 1:52.47 400 IM: 3:57.14A Division I Mid-Major program in the Missouri Valley Conference, Missouri State is helmed by head coach Dave Collins; it was announced last spring that Ryan Lochte would be joining the staff as an assistant coach this season. The men won the 2026 Missouri Valley Conference Championship, marking the team’s 6th total MVC championship title. The Bears sent six athletes to compete at the NCAA Division I Men’s Championships, where they finished 28th overall.
Based on the results from the 2026 MVC Championships, Anderson’s current best in the 1650 free would have placed fifth in the championship heat, while his PBs in the 400 IM and 500 free would have earned him a lane in the ‘B’ final. That already sets him up to be an immediate contributor, with two full seasons of training still ahead before he lines up at his first conference meet.
Anderson joins breaststroker, IMer and sprint freestyler Aaden Lutman and backstroker and sprint freestyler Clark Montgomery in committing to the Bears’ class of 2031 so far.
